  1. How long do the courses last? All college courses can be completed in one semester (16 weeks) or less.
  2. How long will it take to finish college? For the Associate Degree (2 year), a student will need to pass 60 semester units/credit in a formal program. To transfer to a University (if ineligible from high school), a student will need to complete between 56 to 60 minimum transferable units/credits. Therefore, if you wish to complete two years of college in 2 years, take an average of 15 credits per semester, three years of college, take an average of 10 credits per semester, and .............
  3. Can I take as long as I wish at College of Marin? Yes, there is no time limit for completing college. Some students graduate from College of Marin in 4 semesters, some take many years. However, when you transfer to a University, you may be limited to the amount of time you spend and the number of units you can take while there.
  4. What is the least number of units/credits, and the most number of units/credits I can take? You can take as few as 1/2 unit and as many as 18 units. Special permission from the Academic Standards Committee is required if you wish to enroll in more than 18 units.
  5. What are general education courses? General education courses are sometimes called "breadth requirements." These are courses outside of your major, required of everyone to obtain a degree, regardless of your major. They are designed to make you a "well rounded person".
  6. What are electives? These are courses of your choice. When you have completed your major courses and your general education courses, you must take enough "elective" courses to give you enough units to receive a degree or to transfer. You may want to use these elective courses to develop another major or minor.
  7. Can I receive credit for my life /work experience at College of Marin? Presently, College of Marin does not offer this option; however, there are a number of four year college and universities that have this program. Check with the Transfer/Career Center or a College of Marin counselor for current listings.
  8. Do I need an Associate Degree to Transfer? No. The Associate Degree has nothing to do with whether you will be accepted to a four-year college or university (with the exception of certain athletic programs); however, you will find that in a number of the College's Associate Degree majors, required courses are the same courses the university requires the student to complete before transfering. Therefore, why not work towards your Associate Degree simutaneously while working towards transfering. Since "real life" is unpredictable, at least you've completed a formal degree along the way!
  9. What if I don't know what my major will be? Begin selecting courses in a subject area that you're familiar with and have some interest in. From this first step, you will begin developing new ideas about this subject area in which to further explore. REMEMBER,just because you are interested in a subject matter, does not mean you will have a "career" in this area. You are choosing a subject area in which to use to develop your mind ........that is :

All of these skills are necessary to succeed in college and in life.
