ACADEMIC COUNSELING
begins with educational goal-setting, exploring educational options
and opportunities, evaluating educational potential, and providing the student
with clear, concise and up-to-date educational information of all types.
A wide range of services are provided that include:
- STUDENT EDUCATIONAL PLANS (SEP):
Educational plans are made that include specific courses that will be taken
by the student for each subsequent term until their degree objective is
obtained. Students must have a major or goal selected and Mathematics and
English Assessment Tests completed before making a Student Educational
Plan.
- COURSE SELECTION AND PLANNING:
Counselors are available to assist in helping students select courses that
will meet specific areas of interest or goals.
- PREVIOUS COURSE EVALUATIONS: Students
with course work taken at other institutions of higher learning can have
this previous work unofficially evaluated regarding degree, certificate,
transfer, or prerequisite requirements.
- ACADEMIC PROBATION:
Students who have attempted at least 12 units at College of Marin and who
have less than a 2.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) are placed on Academic Probation.
Students on Academic Probation must see a counselor and complete a "Student
Educational Plan" before registering for the next semester. For more

- PROGRESS PROBATION: Students who
have enrolled in at least 12 units or two semesters and have a cumulative
Non-Progress Grade (NPG) of 50% or more will be subject to probation. Students
on Progress Probation are required to meet with a counselor and complete
or update a "Student Educational Plan".
- ACADEMIC DIFFICULTY:
Counselors are available to help students having academic difficulties
find assistance that will help them improve their academic performance.
Problems may stem from a variety of areas including personal or social.
Crisis Counseling and referrals are also available.
- CHOOSE MAJOR: Students who have
not chosen a major or career field or who are consdering a change of major
or career may see a counselor for assistance.
- STUDY SKILLS
ASSISTANCE: Study skill assistance is available in various
forms that include tutoring, study skills workshops, study skill course,
and specific learning assistance.
- STUDENT SUCCESS COURSES: Courses
are available that are designed to assist students in improving their academic
development in speicific area such as study skills, re-entry to college,
personal development, college success, university transfer. Click here for a list of classes.
