How do I register?

The best way to register is to drop by during the lab hours and talk to one of the lab instructors. You can test your skills, discuss your goals, and work out a schedule before you commit yourself to a class.

 

THE LAB COURSES

The English Skills Lab offers a variety of one unit classes in which you can learn select English skills at your own pace. Each one unit course has several different levels because people learn in different ways and at different speeds. Each course is built around its own textbook or computer program. Before you start a course, you must consult with an instructor to determine which class and text are best for you. Below is a list of the courses and some of the program/textbooks available

 

English 70 - Phonics COM (2005) IVC (5129)

Study Units A or B.

Self-paced. Learn how to pronounce and spell simple English words. Learn how to spell the basic sight words.

English 71 - Spelling I - COM (2006) IVC (5130)

Better Spelling by James Brown and Study Units.

Self-paced. Begin at the very beginning and learn to spell. Practice English pronunciation. Learn how to use the dictionary.

 

English 73 - Vocabulary I - COM (2007) IVC (5132)

504 Absolutely Essential Words by Murray Bromberg and Study Units.

Self-Paced. Learn spelling through vocabulary. Some people learn to spell most easily by learning words in meaningful contexts. Learn the fascinating history of the English language.

 

English 74 - Vocabulary II - COM (2009) IVC (5133)

Vocabulary for the College Bound by H Levine and Study Units.

Self-paced. Learn the more complex words needed by a successful college student. Continue learning vocabulary through roots, prefixes and suffixes.

 

English 75 - Reading Improvement - COM (2010) IVC (5134)

Reading and Critical Thinking in the Content Areas by Barnes and Study Units.

Self-paced. Learn to find the main idea of passages. Expand your vocabulary. Remember what you read.

 

English 76 - Reading Comprehension - COM (2011) IVC (5135)

Analytical Reading and Reasoning by Arthur Whimbey and Study Units.

Self -paced. Intermediate text on the thinking abilities needed to read well. Improve your ability to understand and retain anything you read.

 

English 77 - Independent Reading - COM (2012) IVC (5136)

Individual Reading Programs.

Self-paced. First you must find a lab teacher who has the scheduled time to help you create a program of reading and writing. You may investigate any area that requires at least 24 hours of in-lab work. The work will include substantial reading and written summaries, explications, research and/or analysis.. The contract must be approved by the lab supervisor.

 

English 78 - Special Interest Workshop - COM (2013) IVC (5137)

Individual Writing Programs.

Self-paced. First you must find a lab teacher who has the scheduled time to help you create a contract. You and the teacher must meet for at least 15 minutes each week. Most students use this class to learn specific kinds of college writing such as paragraph practice, advanced essay form, research techniques, or technical writing. The program requires at least 24 hours of in-lab work. The contract must be approved by the lab supervisor

 

English 79 - Grammar Review - COM (2014) IVC (5138)

English 2600 or English 3200 by M. Blumenthal.

Self-paced. A quick-moving, programmed text for students who want a thorough review of English sentence structure, style and form. Rigorous.

Focus on Grammar High Inermediate by Fuchs and Bonner and Study Units A or B

Focus on Grammar Advanced by Fuchs and Bonner and Study Units A or B

Self-paced. Four Courses designed for students who have learned English as a second language and want writing and grammar practice.
