COMPUTER APPLICATIONS/SUPPORT SPECIALIST?

What do they do?

Computer Applications/Support Specialists provide technical support, assistance, troubleshooting, training and documentation to computer end users. Positions include User Support Specialist, Customer Support Representative, and Software Trainer.

Computer Applications/Support Specialists interpret problems for computers users and answer questions about hardware, software, and systems. They may work for a hardware or software vendor, or work for a help-desk or support service firm.

What abilities and skills should I have?
  • Ability to set up, install, configure, and troubleshoot hardware.
  • Install, configure, upgrade, maintain, and trouble-shoot software in a microcomputer environment.
  • Solve computer problems using recognized problem-solving methods
  • Proficient in using a variety of applications and operating system software
  • Prepare training materials and train end-users
  • use appropriate library and information resources to research user support issues, concepts, and tools and support lifelong technical learning
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others
  • Speak and write effectively; ability to communicate so others will understand
  • Possess organizational and administrative ability and ability to supervise staff
  • Familiarity with Internet use

  • Computer support specialists are projected to be among the fastest growing occupations from 2002-12
  • Fast-paced and deadline driven; constantly interact with customers and fellow employees
  • Must be competent in the use of computers and business software
  • Work is generally sedentary, but often requires stamina and energy to keep up with the pace of daily and special projects
  • May supervise a number of workers
