a MANAGER?

What do they do?

Managers are responsible for achieving department or company goals by working through others in the organization. They usually have formal titles such as president, department head, division manager, or supervisor.

Managers plan, organize, direct, control, and coordinate the activities of an organization. They should have effective technical skills, such as being proficient in computer use and maintaining budgets; human relations skills, such as the ability to inspire dedication, loyalty and creativity among workers; and conceptual skills, such as the ability to effectively plan and formulate goals, evaluate and interpret trends, and interpret policies and procedures.

What abilities and skills should I have?
  • Knowledge of accounting/bookkeeping principles and practices and the analysis of financial data
  • Knowledge of business and organizational planning, coordination, and execution
  • Speak and write effectively; ability to communicate so others will understand
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others
  • Be able to handle confidential matters and set priorities
  • Use logic and analysis to identify the strengths and weaknesses of a potential action
  • Competence in using a variety of business software applications
  • Organizational and administrative ability and ability to supervise staff
  • Familiarity with Internet use
  • What's the work environment like?
  • Fast-paced and deadline driven
  • Usually indoors, in modern offices
  • Must be competent in the use of computers and business software
  • Work is generally sedentary, but often requires stamina and energy to keep up with the pace of daily and special projects
  • May supervise a number of workers
