New students must sign up for a Student Success Workshop that includes an orientation and placement tests. New Students are students with less than 15 units at another College. Please refer to the Class Schedule for the dates and times of the Success Workshops.

 

Math and English Placement Tests

College of Marin Office of Assessment and Testing administers Accuplacer placement tests in Math and English. These placement tests are required as proof of eligibility for any Math or English class which has prerequisites. The tests are adaptive, computer-based, and untimed. Students receive a placement score immediately following their test session.

Photo I.D. is required to test. We only test students who are enrolling at College of Marin. We do not give placement tests to students who are planning to attend a different community college.

 

Testing Schedule

All testing is done by appointment only, during scheduled dates and times. Other times may be available at the discretion of the Testing Office. Some test dates may be cancelled without notice. Testing is always done at the Kentfield Testing Office unless a different location is specifically listed.

MAY 2013

This schedule is for returning students. First time new full-time students should take placement tests in conjunction with a Student Success Workshop, where an orientation and a counseling appointment is given.

ENGLISH AND MATH

Students can access sample questions at the College Board website: http://accuplacer.collegeboard.org/students (Sample questions are located on the right side of the webpage.) The College Board also provides an Accuplacer Study App (compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad; cost of $1.99) available through the Apple iTunes store. More informattion can be found here.

Practice tests and "Testing Secrets" book are available at the Kentfield an Indian Valley libraries at the reserve desk for 1-hour checkout.

Getting the Most Out of Your Placement Testing Experience at COM

Placement tests are an important first step for students at College of Marin. For this reason please take note of the following information.

Review the Material

A placement test is designed to assess your abilities so that you are placed in an appropriate course level. The testing office strongly encourages students to review the subject matter before testing.

Test at Your Best

The testing office provides a distraction-reduced environment. If you are feeling unwell or tired, you can reschedule to a different date.

Arrive on Time

Testing sessions are typically 3 hours. If you require more time you can finish your test on another day, but no later than two weeks from the date you started the test.

Don't Wait until the Last Minute

Testing before a semester begins gives you more time to speak with a counselor, choose classes, and make other preparations.

 

Accuplacer tests can be taken only two times within a two-year period

  • Placement tests are given year round on pre-scheduled dates.
  • Tests are given at Assessment and Testing Office, room 238, Student Services Building, Kentfield Campus or in Building 27, room 125, Indian Valley Campus in Novato.
  • Students who arrive late may have to reschedule to the next available test date.
  • All Placement tests require appointments: please call (415) 485-9469 to make an appointment.
  • Students who have not made an appointment will be seated if space is available.
  • Photo I.D. Required.

 

GED Test

Students who want to take the GED test are referred to Tamalpais Adult School in Larkspur.
