The state of California establishes guidelines which determine both financial and educational eligibility for EOPS assistance.

Students applying to the EOPS program for the first time must meet these three eligibility requirements:

Income

  • Qualify for a fee waiver, BOGW A or BOGW B grant (apply in the Financial Aid Office)

Education (one of the following)

  • Placement test results showing you are not qualified for enrollment in English 150 or Math 101
  • You did not graduate from high school or do not have a GED
  • You are a high school graduate with a GPA of 2.49 or below
  • You have been previously enrolled in remedial education
  • Other factors as determined by the EOPS Director

Units

  • You must be enrolled as a full time student (12 or more units)
  • You must have completed fewer than 70 degree applicable units from any institution of higher education

The EOPS coordinator determines final approval for eligibility. Stop by the office to see if you qualify.

Services Available

EOPS students are eligible for a wide range of support services which include:

  • Academic, career, vocational and transfer counseling. Professional counselors are available to meet you throughout the semester.
  • Bookgrants. You will receive a check or voucher at the beginning of the semester to help you pay for your books.
  • Tutoring. All EOPS students are encouraged to take advantage of the free peer tutoring program available for all COM students. If further help is needed, EOPS students are eligible for one hour of individualized free tutoring per subject per week.
  • Computers. The EOPS/Tutoring Center in LC 160 has several computers available for EOPS students who wish to use them for academic purposes.
  • College campus tours. Each spring, the EOPS counselors take interested EOPS students for a private tour of many of the UC and CSU campuses in the area.
  • Cultural, Educational, and Social Events. The EOPS program offers different events to support the further development of it’s students beyond the classroom.
  • General information and services. The EOPS staff is always available to answer questions, provide information, and refer students to other departments on campus.
