MEDA 120 3.0 units Medical Terminology I Learn to speak, spell, and write the language of medicine. The fundamental language necessary for those seeking to enter a health care or legal field. May be taken before or after MEDA 121. Transfer Credit: CSU 5151 Benavides V J W 2:10-5pm, IVC/PM255 MEDA 121 3.0 units Medical Terminology II This is a course in medical word building, with special emphasis upon spelling, and anatomical, diagnostic, surgical, and pathological terminology. Transfer Credit: CSU 5152 Miller J E M 2:10-5pm, IVC/PM255 MEDA 126 2.0 units Medical Office Computers - MediSoft Prerequisite: TAKE WITH MEDA 126L This theory course will provide an overview of computers in the medical office. The focus will be on the MediSoft program where we will learn the basic functions of the software. Transfer Credit: CSU 5153 Miller J M M 10:10-12noon, IVC/PM255 MEDA 126L 0.5 unit Medical Office Computers - MediSoft Lab Prerequisite: TAKE WITH MEDA 126 This laboratory class will apply theory learned in MEDA 126 and provide students with practical exercises on the computer using the MediSoft program. Transfer Credit: CSU 5154 Miller J C M 12:10-1:30pm, IVC/AS102 MEDA 136 2.5 units Medical Lab Procedures Prerequisite: TAKE WITH MEDA 136L This theory course will review lab procedures commonly performed by medical assistants in the laboratory, clinic, or medical office. Transfer Credit: CSU 5155 Lacy C G T 9:10-11:30am, IVC/PM255 MEDA 136L 1.0 unit Med Lab Procedures Lab Prerequisite: TAKE WITH MEDA 136 This laboratory course will provide the student with basic skills to perform common laboratory procedures and diagnostic tests often performed in medical offices and clinics. ($10 material fee) Transfer Credit: CSU 5156 Lacy C R W 11:10-2pm, IVC/PM252 5157 Lacy C A T 12:40-3:30pm, IVC/PM252 MEDA 141 3.0 units Phlebotomy Techniques Prerequisite: W/141L;ADVS 136 This course will provide students with knowledge of the role of the phlebotomist and information on the techniques, skills, and equipment for safe and effective blood collection procedures. Student must show proof of High School graduation or GED or equivalent. Transfer Credit: CSU 5158 1/22-3/20 Dobra L T 6:10-9pm, IVC/PM252 & PM255 and Th 6:10-8:30pm, IVC/PM252 & PM255 Note: Room changed to PM252 & PM255, T 6:10-9pm and to PM252 & PM255, Th 6:10-8:30pm Also meets one Saturday to be arranged. MEDA 141L 1.0 unit Phlebotomy Techniques Practicum Prerequisite: W/141; ADVS 136L Students will practice and perform capillary and venipunctures in a medical setting under supervision of clinical personnel and instructor. Required: lab coat, name tag and student patch. Each student will be assigned to work one week from 9-5pm between 3/24-6/6 in a clinical setting to complete the 50 hours for this course. Students will not be admitted to this class without proof of required documents. The State requires the student to provide a completed health clearance form, negative TB test, and proof of High School graduation or GED or equivalent. ($35 material fee) Transfer Credit: CSU 5159 3/24-6/06 Dobra L TBA IVC/PM252/FIELD MEDA 145 2.0 units Holistic Health, Disease, and Research This course explores holistic approaches to disease/illness commonly treated/diagnosed in medical offices, their causative factors, treatment and related research. Transfer Credit: CSU 5160 Lacy C F W 8:40-10:30am, IVC/PM255 MEDA 150 1.5 units Pharmacology for Medical Assistants This course introduces the student to common drugs/medications used in outpatient medical care and their simple mathematical computations. Transfer Credit: CSU 5161 Chang J F M 8:10-9:30am, IVC/PM255 MEDA 210L 2.5 units Clinical Externship Prerequisite: PLEASE SEE CATALOG This course extends the student's educational preparation from the classroom to the clinic/office for practice. Physical exam, health clearance, immunizations, CPR and First Aid are required. ($10 material fee) Transfer Credit: CSU 5162 3/20-5/15 Lacy C ThF 9:10-12:30pm, IVC/PM252 and ThF 1:10-5pm, Off-site Clinical Facilities Students will not be admitted to this class without required documents.
