COMM 110 3.0 units Intro to Mass Communication Prerequisite: S SC 125 ADVISED A critical historical survey of mass media including print (newspapers, magazines, books), broadcast (radio and television), film, audio recording, images, news gathering and reporting, public relations, advertising, media rights and responsibilities, media ethics and impact, audience and feedback, cyber media, and global media. Designed for general education, career exploration, and consumer understanding of the interaction and influences among and between media and our culture. Transfer Credit: CSU/UC 1758 Dougan M T 6:10-9pm, KTD/TB119 May be taken for credit as COMM 110 or JOUN 110. Students receive credit for only one course. COMM 160 3.0 units Images of Race, Gender, and Class in the Media In this course we will explore how gender, race, class, sexual orientation, ethnicity, and other social positions affect media coverage, portrayals, production and reception. The course focuses on historical roots of stereotyping, theories, methods of analysis, media representations of various groups, and topics of current interest. Students conduct research projects in their chosen area of interest and develop expertise in media literacy and criticism with respect to issues of multiculturalism and gender. May be taken for credit as COMM 160 or JOUN 160. Students receive credit for only one course.
