COM Students Will Host Debate for Trustee Candidates
Candidates for the College of Marin Board of Trustees have been invited by student government leaders to participate in a debate on Oct. 20, 2011, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Deedy Staff Lounge located in the Kentfield Campus Student Services Building, 835 College Ave., Kentfield, CA. The event is open to the public and is free of charge.
The following candidates have confirmed their participation: incumbent Philip J. Kranenburg, Joan Lisetor, incumbent Dr. Eva Long, Stephanie O'Brien, Peter Romanowsky, and Jack Wilkinson. Incumbent Dr. James Namnath is unable to attend the debate. Candidates will be asked a variety of questions by a three-person panel, which will include a member of College of Marin faculty senate, an Associated Students of College of Marin (ASCOM) member, and a community at large member. Modernization Program to Hold Community Forums
Please join us on Oct. 12 and 27, 2011. These meetings are intended to bring the community up to date on the progress of the modernization program. There will be question and answer periods following the presentations. The forums are open to the public and are free of charge. Open Forum with the Superintendent/President Today
I will host an Open Forum today, Oct. 6, from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Student Services Building, Deedy Staff Lounge, Kentfield Campus. Faculty, staff, and students are invited to bring their ideas, questions, and other subjects of interest.
New York Times Best Selling Author Neal Stephenson at COM Tonight
College of Marin and Book Passage will host acclaimed writer Neal Stephenson, who will read from and discuss his novel, Reamde, (a spoonerism pronounced as Read Me). This special event will take place in Thursday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. in Olney Hall. I'm pleased to share with you that the University of Northern Iowa Alumni Association has just announced the winners of this year's Heritage Honours Awards. Director of Community Education, Lifelong Learning, and International Education Jason Lau, Ph.D. has been selected as the recipient of 2011 Young Alumnus Award, which recognizes graduates of 40 years of age or younger who have excelled in their professions at a young age. Congratulations on your amazing range of accomplishments!
College of Marin Italian Instructor Lido Cantarutti was featured in local newspaper the Marin IJ in a write up about the Italian Film Festival. Taking place now through Nov. 12, it is the longest running film festival in Marin County. The festival began as an informal screening of Italian films here at the college and is now in its 35th year. Cantarutti is the festival's founder and has been honored as an outstanding part-time faculty member here at COM. He is also a former Cristoforo Club of Marin Italian-American citizen of the year. Congratulations and grazie for bringing a little piece of Italia to Marin County!
Seasonal Flu Shots $20
Influenza ("flu") is a contagious disease which can be spread by coughing, sneezing, and nasal secretions. The College of Marin Health Center will be offering seasonal flu shots for $20.
The College of Marin Health Centers are not Medicare providers, nor do they bill insurance plans. Flu shots are available for everyone over 18 years of age.
Circle of Champions
The College of Marin Department of Athletics and the Circle of Champions are honored to present a celebration of the career of Coach Cal Riemcke and the entry of his name into the College of Marin Athletic Hall of Fame. The College of Marin Drama Department presents Arabian Nights. Performances are Oct. 7, 8, 14 and 15 at 8 p.m. and Oct. 9 and 16 at 2 p.m. at the Performing Arts Tent on the central lawn of the Kentfield Campus. Ride a magic carpet into the minareted world of ancient Baghdad. The evening will unfold with the legendary tales of Sheherezade. COM Professor Molly Noble will direct Tony-Award-winning playwright Mary Zimmerman’s re-telling of the mystical 1001 tales. Annual Fall Job Fair
The Job Placement Center at College of Marin is hosting the Annual Fall Job Fair in the Student Services Building on the Kentfield Campus. The event will be held Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2011, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Employers and resource agencies from the Bay Area will be present to provide employment opportunities and resources to College of Marin students, alumni, and community members. This event is open to the public and free of charge.
