The Health and Safety Office and College Police put on a class for disaster preparedness in October and November 2001, in May 2005, and in fall 2008. The following pages of material are presented from the notes to those classes. Feel free to print this information for yourself or others. You can use the "cut and paste" method to transfer the text to a word processor and print only the text you need. If you have suggestions for disaster preparedness, or if you wish to attend a disaster preparedness class, PLEASE call Police Chief Lacy at xt 7455. STAFF and STUDENT Safety Information Handouts

It only takes a few moments of your time to do. Emergency Personnel know what ICE means and they look for it immediately. Program your cell phone NOW If you have a problem on campus and need help, the best way to get it is NOT to call 9-1-1 from a cell phone. You will first get CHP, which will delay our PD response to you. You should program your cellphone NOW and add "Police Dispatch 415-485-9696" to your contacts list. Calling our dispatch center directly will get you the fastest response. EMERGENCY MESSAGING SYSTEM Want to be notified immediately of campus closures and emergencies? Marin Community College District Police Department, with sponsorship from alertu.org, is currently enrolled in the AlertU emergency SMS messaging platform to enhance our current communication services during crisis situations. AlertU will allow us to broadcast critical information, in real time, to the mobile devices (cell phones, etc) of all employees and the student body. This is particularly important for those who may be in, or near, a crisis zone. In the event of a campus problem, you will receive a text (SMS) message on your cell phone describing what is happening, and what you should do. To sign up, go to www.alertu.org/mccd and follow the directions. Personal Disaster Kit List Consider every disaster a "BYOBS" event! Keep a kit in your car and in your office if possible. Duffel Bag containing:
This is a partial list. Please modify to suit your needs. Batteries and perishable items must be replaced as needed. Heat sensitive items should be stored in a cool place. Special Note to Instructors The first meeting of your class, you discuss things like class requirements, break times, and parking regulations (tell them not to park in staff lots, etc). This is a excellent time to review disaster preparedness with your class! Suggest they make a Personal Disaster Kit. Remind them to "duck and cover" in an earthquake. Point out possible pre and post-disaster hazards, exits, escape routes, and re-assembly areas. Discuss the active shooter procedure. Your students will be looking to you for guidance in a disaster or active shooter event. If you tell students how to respond on the first day of class, they may be able to save your life if you become incapacitated during the disaster.
