COM Nursing Department plays an important role in METI curriculum innovationThe College of Marin Department of Nursing Education is pleased to announce the publication of two simulation scenarios written in collaboration with COM nursing faculty and nursing students. The scenarios are available in the 2008 Medical Equipment Technologies Inc. (METI) Program for Nursing Curriculum Integration (PCNI). METI is the company that produced the robotic manikin simulators and scenarios that the nursing program purchased with Capacity Grant funds. The new curriculum contains two simulation scenarios written in collaboration by two COM second-year nursing students, one nursing faculty, and the simulation coordinator from the College of Marin Registered Nursing Program.

The training scenarios are titled: Hypotension in the Procedural Catheterization Laboratory and Patient Management and Postoperative Care of the Pediatric Patient with Complications: Seizure and Allergic Reaction. The authors are Class of 2008 students Andrea Giachetti and Leilani Arian, nursing faculty Mary Pieper-Warren, and Simulation Laboratory Coordinator Edward Avrutin. Advanced robotic manikins and realistic health emergency scenario presentations of this kind are now used to advance the clinical skills of students around the world.

The scenarios were so well received that METI requested them for use in their forthcoming curriculum revision. Mary, Edward, Andrea, and Leilani agreed to donate the scenarios to METI in exchange for the COM RN Program receiving the 2008 package of METI curriculum software, worth over $2000, for free. The name of our college, as well as the names of our students and faculty authors, will be cited on all versions of the scenarios, which will be available for use by 258 schools in 11 countries. Several other universities also participated in writing the revised curriculum. It is a testament to their great talent and initiative that the excellent work of our faculty and students is included in METI’s revised curriculum.

Congratulations to all involved for your outstanding efforts!
