Modernization Schedule at Kentfield, Fall 2009By now many of you have heard that Kentfield classes for fall semester 2009 are being scheduled in existing buildings (e.g., PE still in portables, Behavioral Sciences still in Dickson Hall). It’s important for everyone to know that the modernization moves planned for the summer will still take place. Two situations, however, made it necessary to shift the timing of the moves.

First, the state employee furlough program has impacted the ability of the Division of the State Architect (DSA) to expedite their design reviews. With five Kentfield projects still in DSA (Fine Arts, Performing Arts, Science, the West Bridge, and the temporary Dance portable), the likelihood of starting the Science project in the summer is now slim (although the Fine Arts project is still expected to start construction by July). Moreover, a temporary Dance space is not expected to be ready until almost December. Therefore, vacating Dickson Hall and the Dance/Landscape building during the summer months is no longer necessary or practical.

Second, while the PE Complex is still expected to be finished before the start of the fall semester, the timing is so tight (about two weeks) that even the slightest “hiccup” in construction could delay completion past opening day. Anyone who has attempted to hold classes in an almost-finished building will understand how disruptive it is. It’s therefore more practical to start PE classes in the portables, then move when construction is completely finished.

The connection between these two situations is a large triple move. First, the PE Department will move from the portables into the PE Complex. Next, a number of classes will be reassigned from the upper campus to the PE portables. Third, Dickson Hall and the Dance/Landscape Building will be vacated. The final designation of the class reassignments will be forthcoming from the Office of Instructional Management under the direction of Vice President Chang.

Those facilitating the move believe that students will be less disrupted in the fall if they are sent to familiar locations on opening day. The modernization and maintenance departments will also have the time they need to prepare the temporary spaces for their next occupants, and the moves can take place in an orderly fashion throughout the semester.

Finally, the staff/faculty moves from Dickson Hall to Fusselman Hall can still take place as soon as the affected individuals are ready to move. The Modernization Team will continue to work with the vice president, deans, and department chairs to expedite this move.
As always, the primary focus of the Modernization Team is to minimize disruption while keeping the program moving toward completion. If you have any questions about the modernization program at any time, feel free to contact our Director of Modernization, V-Anne Chernock, at ext. 7343 or by e-mail. Thank you for your continued patience and flexibility!

College of Marin Outreach Program and Biology Department Promote Science Education for Elementary School StudentsCollege of Marin Office of Outreach and School Relations and the Biology Department organized an event on Feb. 24 to introduce 32 third graders from West Marin to careers in science. The 32 students, six teachers, and several parents visited the computer center at the Austin Science Center and witnessed a demonstration on the use of computers to study the human body. Participants saw how the activity of muscles can be studied following their electrical events which can then be displayed on a computer screen.

The field trip to COM was organized by Biology Professor Fernando Agudelo-Silva, High School Outreach Coordinator Jorge Alfonso, and Computer Science Lab Tech Alice Dieli. Biology Professor Dr. David Egert configured the computer application that was used in the demo; and the demonstrations were done by Alice Dieli and one of our students, Sherri Young. Pictures of the demonstration will be available soon online.
