Addendum to the Focused Midterm Report An Addendum to the Focused Midterm Report has been prepared and is ready to be sent to WASC after a Board review on Tuesday, December 11. The Commission, which meets in January, is eager to receive the report. The Addendum includes the process for completing all Program Reviews as required by WASC Standards. In addition to information about Program Review, a revised Self Planning Agenda is included, reflecting how the college has addressed the self-identified issues cited in the 2003/2004 Self Study for Affirmation of Accreditation. WASC will send a letter to the college in January stating our status, and we will publish the letter once it is received. Thursday, January 17 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., SC 144 Presented by Alice Dieli This session will begin with a demonstration of a working “automated gradebook,” followed by a hands-on activity beginning with logging in to the COM Intranet from an off campus computer through finding your roster, copying and pasting it to Excel, adding data, creating formulas, applying the formulas quickly to the entire list of students, and finally sorting the data. Participants will receive a handout with step-by-step instructions along with a phone number and email contact for help. Prerequisites!! Participants need to know their COM Login Name and Password. Get Online with Web-based Teaching! Thursday, January 17 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m., SC 144 Presented by COM faculty Cheryl Goldman and Kathleen Smyth This hands-on workshop will teach you how to begin to integrate innovative web-based learning into your teaching curriculum. Blackboard/WebCT gives you the tools necessary to post your syllabus and homework assignments, create a class calendar, and develop a discussion board for your students. Medical Plan Open Enrollment The College is accepting changes to College-sponsored medical plans during open enrollment. Health Net and Kaiser representatives will be available to answer questions about their programs at a teleconference meeting to be held on Monday, December 17, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. The meeting will be held in LC 53 on the Kentfield Campus and IS 201 on the Indian Valley Campus. Open Enrollment memos are being distributed in campus mailboxes (see note below). The deadline for enrolling in another plan is January 16, 2008 with coverage effective February 1, 2008. College of Marin Reprographics now uses recycled paper and encourages recycling of all appropriate paper as listed above. Producing paper from recycled paper requires less energy and creates less air and water pollution than using virgin wood pulp. There are many good websites offering more information on recycling, including Carnegie Mellon and Marin Sanitary Service, among others. Kudos Professor Walter Turner, Chairperson Social Sciences, was a member of a recent Non-Governmental Organization delegation to the Middle East countries of Jordan and Syria, both currently home to more than two- million Iraqi refugees. The specific focus of the delegation was to collect data on the impact of the war in Iraq regarding human displacement and provision of services for refugees. Meetings were held with Iraqi and Jordanian scholars, Non-Governmental Organizations, United Nations officials, and refugee relief associations. This fall has been a record breaking semester for the Tutoring Center. They have served the most students and recorded the greatest number of attendance hours in the history of the program. More than 700 students received nearly 6,000 hours of tutoring this semester. Betty Goerke, Anthropology and Archeology instructor, recently had a discussion and book signing at the California Academy of Sciences for her book, Chief of Marin, which was published last spring. Also, in November, she was a speaker at Dominican University as part of the Marin Museum of the American Indian Lecture Series. Through the efforts of George Hritz, Automotive Technical Program instructor and coordinator, and Jim Custeau, Cuyamaca College Automotive instructor and California Automotive Teachers Association President, the California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) will supply all BAR Certified Training Institutions with new required equipment to perform low pressure evap testing. This affects 70 community colleges and will result in a savings of $350,000.00 to the Community College System. Also, the California Automotive Business Coalition Executive Board recently elected George Hritz as President of the California Automotive Business Coalition Educational Foundation. In addition, George was among five teachers from BAR Certified Training Institutions to be selected as Subject Matter Experts. COM Invites Applications for Open Board Seat Applications for the open seat on the Governing Board will be accepted through December 15, 2007. Longtime College of Marin Board of Trustees member Greg Brockbank is leaving his position on the College of Marin Board to take his newly elected seat on the San Rafael City Council. Interested individuals who are living within the boundaries of the College of Marin District and who are registered voters are welcome to apply for the one existing vacancy. All applications will become public records upon receipt by the District. Candidates will be interviewed in open session by the current Governing Board members at a meeting scheduled for that purpose on January 8, 2008. Persons wanting to submit questions for the existing Board members to consider during interviewing should do so by December 15, 2007. Enrollment Deadline for Pretax Program Section 125 This is a reminder that the deadline to enroll in the Section 125 Flexible Benefit Plan for 2008 is December 14, 2007. Salary Redirection forms must be returned to the Payroll Office by that date. Participation in the unreimbursed medical and/or child/dependent care portions of the program require that you reenroll each year. Salary Redirection forms are available in the Human Resources and Payroll Departments. Police Training at IVC The College of Marin is providing space for "Active Shooter" training for all Marin County Law Enforcement Officers. Approximately 250 officers (about 25 at a time) will be training to respond to an "active shooter" situation. By using the College, they will be more familiar with our surroundings in the event they ever need to respond to assist us. Students and staff can expect to see uniformed officers in the area of Building 6 at the IVC Campus. Officers will be walking through scenarios and patterns as part of the training. You may hear loud yelling and noises if you are near the building, but most noise should be contained inside. There will be many signs posted in the area of the training to advise people that this is only a training exercise. The College Police would like to thank everyone for their help and understanding during the scheduling of this event, and during the actual training exercises. COM Athletics Upcoming Home Game: Men’s Basketball vs. Butte: Tuesday, December 11, 6 p.m. Brown Bag Theatre One of the Drama Department's busiest programs is the Directors’ Workshop, otherwise known as Brown Bag Theatre. Performing Arts Department Schedule Dance Break the Floor, a benefit show for the Dance Program, is scheduled for Friday, December 14, 7:30 p.m., in the Kentfield Campus Dance Studio. The show, with some original student choreography, will feature hip hop, tap, and ballroom and will include guest artists from the cast of the upcoming San Anselmo Playhouse production of Once Upon a Mattress, starring Sandi V. College Chorus and Chamber Singers The winter choral fest has it all, from Renaissance to jazz. The College Chorus, directed by Boyd Jarrell with accompanist Jeffrey Paul, will perform Banchieri's delightful Counterpoint of the Animals and holiday music from around the world. From the holidays to the hilarious, this concert will be a great way to spend an evening on Tuesday, December 11, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Lefort Recital Hall (FA72). Admission is free. COM Symphony Orchestra The fall concerts, presented by the symphony orchestra and directed by Tara Flandreau, will feature favorites from the American repertoire by George Gershwin, Aaron Copland, and Charles Ives. Romantic Rarities II Paul Smith, with piano duo Szervanszky/Cavaye and guest violist George Thomson, will perform Hector Berlioz' Harold in Italy in Chabrier's arrangement for one piano/four hands and viola, and Camille Saint Saens' two piano transcription of the Piano Sonata in B minor by Franz Liszt. Contemporary Opera Marin Contemporary Opera Marin presents Homegrown 2 - more operas by Marin County composers, Broken Jukebox by COM faculty member Tara Flandreau, and two works by Tiburon composer Ron McFarland, Tamsen Donner and his micro opera, The Audition of Molly Bloom. Paul Smith is director of the production. The performances will be in the Fine Arts Building on Friday, January 18, and Saturdays, January 17 and 26, at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, January 27, at 2 p.m. Admission is $10 general and $5 for students, staff, seniors, and alumni. Performing Arts Department A Performing Arts Department combined production of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be offered on February 29, March 1, 7, 8, 14, and 15 at 8 p.m. and March 9 and 16 at 2 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre. This production will be directed by James Dunn, with musical direction by Tara Flandreau and choreography by Sandra Tanner.
