Monday, November 20, 2006 PRE-TAX Program Section 125 - Enrollment Deadline December 15, 2006 Please check your mailbox for the memo distributed to all permanent employees regarding the upcoming deadline for enrolling in the Section 125 plan. The Section 125 plan year ends on December 31, 2006. Employees planning to continue participation or wishing to enroll will need to do so by December 15, 2006. The new plan year is effective January 1, 2007. Participation in the pre-tax FLEX plan is voluntary and the enrollment period is limited to once annually. A Section 125 plan is an employee benefit plan, authorized by Section 125 of the Internal Revenue Code, which allows employees to redirect a portion of their salaries into the plan on a PRETAX basis. This can provide significant tax savings for both the employee and employer. AFLAC representative, Ms. Donna Reeve, will be available for individual appointments on Monday, December 4th and Tuesday, December 5th. You may obtain forms from the Human Resources or Payroll Offices and return them the Payroll Office by December 15, 2006. (NOTE: You will be receiving a separate memo informing you of the Health Plan Premiums for Kaiser and Health Net when we receive that information from the carriers.) District Modernization Committee (DMC) Meeting The District Modernization Committee (DMC) will meet on Monday, November 20 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in AC 108. All meetings are open and visitors are welcome. At the beginning of each meeting time is set aside for open discussion. You're invited to attend the Measure C Community Forums Measure C Construction Bond Program Community Forums will be held on December 13 and December 14, 2006. You will learn up-to-date details on how bond dollars are being used to revitalize both the Kentfield and Indian Valley campuses. Current site maps will be presented. The forums will include a question and answer session. The Kentfield Forum will be held Wednesday, December 13, 2006 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Olney Hall, Room 96. The Indian Valley Campus forum will take place on Thursday, December 14, 2006 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Campus Room AS101. Kudos College of Marin alumnus J. Dietrich "Diet" Stroeh, a man credited with rescuing Marin County from a disastrous drought in the 70s and inspiring unprecedented community-wide conservation, has been selected to receive a prestigious California Community College Distinguished Alumni Award for 2006. Active in many community and professional organizations, Stroeh currently serves as a director of the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District, Vice Chair of the College of Marin's President's Circle, on the Bank of Marin Board of Directors, and as a member of the Novato Flood Control Advisory Board. Noncredit instructor Jackie Kudler, author of Sacred Precinct (Sixteen Rivers Press, 2003), was a featured poet at last week's Marin Poetry Center Poetry Reading. Six members of the College of Marin football team have been selected to the All-Bay Valley Conference team, and two others received honorable mention. Offensive players Billy McKie, Herman Morales made the team. Justin Granis, Thomas Christopher, Trevor Loewenthal, and Derek Bosials also made the team. Nick Banaugh and Dave Wise received honorable mentions.
Upcoming The 24 Hour Play Project will be performed on November 18 at 8 p.m. in the Studio Theatre. This play will be created from an idea given to students 24 hours prior to the actual performance and will have been written, rehearsed, costumed, designed and built 24 hours before the event begins. Tickets are a suggested donation of $10 at the door only. No advance sales or reservations. Guest director Anna Berner will direct Gert Hoffman’s darkly comic capitalist take on the apocalypse, Our Man in Madras. It’s the end of the world, but business as usual for our man in Madras. Rounding out the evening will be Improv by AWOL (Actors With Out Lines) COM’s resident improvisational performers. Our Man in Madras and Improv will be performed Fridays and Saturdays, December 1, 2, 8, and 9 at 8 p.m. Tickets for all Black Box Festival events are a suggested donation of $10 at the door. On December 8 at 7 p.m. in Olney Hall 96, the COM Center for Regenerative Design will present John Francis: Saving the Planet One Step at a Time. This COMmunity Profile event features an intimate conversation with John Francis as he describes his pilgrimage on behalf of the environment and world peace that he describes as an interior journey as well as a physical trek walk across North and South America. Also, meet College of Marin Biology professor Paul Da Silva as he shares his perspective on environmental education. This event will be moderated by Sim Van der Ryn and Andres Edwards. Sandi Weldon’s Tap Class, Hip Hop Class, and Ballroom Dance Class will perform and featured student guest choreographers will contribute their original choreography to the event. Special guest Morgaine Nile, The Bubble Lady and professional clown, will also perform. There is a suggested donation of $5 at the door.
