Suggestions for New Fine Arts Building Swinerton Management and Consulting is soliciting suggestions and feedback for the new Fine Arts Building. From November 13-16, suggestion boxes, along with large prints of the layout for the new building, will be available in the Fine Arts Building lobby, the Student Services Center cafeteria area, and the Learning Resource Center first floor lobby. Mother and baby are doing wonderfully. Cari Torres-Benavides, Director of Academic Services & Articulation, and Mauricio Torres-Benavides, Outreach Coordinator, on the birth of their daughter. Alia came into this world on November 8 weighing 9 pounds, 3 ounces and is doing well. Ingrid Schreck, English Department, and Patrick Kelly, Chemistry Department, on the birth of their son Finnegan Austin born on November 3. Finnegan was 6 pounds, 8 ounces and 19 ¾ inches at birth. Mother and baby are fine. Congratulations and good wishes to the new parents!! Club Mud Holiday Sale Club Mud, the College of Marin Ceramics Student Organization, will hold its annual Holiday Sale on Wednesday, November 28, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday, December 9, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Fine Arts Building. The sale will feature ceramics pieces created by students and will include handcrafted pottery and artworks for unique holiday gifts. The sale is open to COM students, faculty, staff, and the public. Proceeds help support Ceramics Department equipment purchases and events.
View Science-Math-Central Plan Complex Model The proposed new Science-Math-Central Plant Complex model will be available for viewing in the Swinerton office, Kentfield Campus, Building MS-3, from October 29 through November 16. Please stop by between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday to have a look. KFD Blood Drive The Kentfield Fire Department is holding its quarterly blood drive on Tuesday, November 13, from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at 1004 Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. They would like to encourage any COM staff or faculty interested in donating to stop by the drive, which is sponsored and staffed by Blood Centers of the Pacific. Donors can simply show up or, if they prefer, set an appointment online at www.bloodheroes.com, sponsor code: Kentfield Fire. Not only is the blood drive an opportunity to provide the precious gift of life to others in our community, but it is also a great way to meet the dedicated firefighters and staff from KFD that serve the Kentfield campus.

Brown Bag Theatre One of the Drama Department's busiest programs is the Directors’ Workshop, otherwise known as Brown Bag Theatre. On November 15 and December 13, from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m., the department will present free, student-directed performing arts events in the Fine Arts Building, Rooms 134-136 at KTD. For more information, call Robin Jackson at (415) 485-9555 (x7555). A.W.O.L. is Back! COM’s very own Improv Troupe, A.W.O.L. (Actors Without Lines), is back and ready to tickle your funny bone with a series of riotous performances. A.W.O.L. will perform every Wednesday from 12 noon to 1 p.m. for free in the Studio Theatre. On Saturday, November 17, there will be a performance at 8 p.m. in the Studio Theatre at KTD. Tickets for the Saturday show will be a $10 donation at the door with doors opening at 7:30 p.m. Open seating is first come, first served. Proceeds from the performances benefit either the Drama Scholarship Fund or the Drama Student Fellowship Fund. ASCOM Dinner and Toy Drive ASCOM is coordinating a holiday dinner and toy drive for at need families and single parents. The dinner and toy distribution are scheduled for Thursday, November 15, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Student Services Center Cafeteria. A complete meal, including turkey and all the extras, will be provided for around 300 people. ASCOM is contacting local businesses for donations, but additional donors and sponsors are welcome. Wine and Dine with Live Owls! Professor Joe Mueller will be hosting the 3rd Annual Evening with Owls, a benefit for WildCare’s Hungry Owl Project. This event is not only a fundraiser for this much needed and ever expanding project, but it is also a way for people to enjoy an evening in the presence and magical spirit of owls. The event will take place on Thursday, November 15, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Marin Art and Garden Center, 350 Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, Ross, and the cost is $55 per person. Piano Ensemble Concert Chamber Ensemble Concerts The chamber ensemble concerts, directed by Paul Smith and Jessica Ivry, will include trios and quartets by Mozart, Beethoven, Bloch, Telemann, Handel, Ravel, and others. Performances are scheduled for Friday, November 30, and Saturday, December 1, at 7:30 p.m. in Lefort Recital Hall (FA72) with a different program each evening. COM Jazz Ensemble Exciting works from the big band repertoire will be performed by the nineteen-piece jazz ensemble with Douglas Delaney as director. A wide selection of styles will be presented, including music by Pat Metheny, Bob Mintzer, Benny Golson, and Tom Jobim. The concert is scheduled for Monday, December 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre. Admission is free. COM Community Chorus The one hundred-voice Community Chorus, directed by Boyd Jarrell, will present an all-Mozart concert featuring sacred choral works from his late Salzburg period. The chorus will be joined by a full orchestra and renowned guest soloists Christa Pfeiffer, Lisa Houston, Jos Milton, and Hugh Davies. The program begins at 8 p.m. on Saturday, December 8, in the Fine Arts Theatre. Donations of $15 general and $10 for students, staff, seniors, and alumni are requested. COM Symphonic Band Douglas Delaney will direct the Symphonic Band in this concert which includes Five Miniatures by Joaquin Turina, The Alcotts by Charles Ives, and Scenes from “The Louvre” by Norman Dello Joio. The program opens with Crown Imperial by William Walton, a march written for the coronation of George VI in 1937. The concert is scheduled for Sunday, December 9, at 4 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre. Admission is free. College Chorus and Chamber Singers The winter choral fest has it all, from Renaissance to jazz. The College Chorus, directed by Boyd Jarrell with accompanist Jeffrey Paul, will perform Banchieri's delightful Counterpoint of the Animals and holiday music from around the world. From the holidays to the hilarious, this concert will be a great way to spend an evening on Tuesday, December 11, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Lefort Recital Hall (FA72). Admission is free. COM Symphony Orchestra The fall concerts, presented by the symphony orchestra and directed by Tara Flandreau, will feature favorites from the American repertoire by George Gershwin, Aaron Copland, and Charles Ives. A highlight of the concert is George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, featuring pianist Paul Smith. Performances are scheduled at the following two venues:
Contemporary Opera Marin Contemporary Opera Marin presents Homegrown 2 - more operas by Marin County composers, Broken Jukebox by COM faculty member Tara Flandreau, and two works by Tiburon composer Ron McFarland, Tamsen Donner and his micro opera, The Audition of Molly Bloom. Paul Smith is director of the production. The performances will be in the Fine Arts Building on Friday, January 18, and Saturdays, January 17 and 26, at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, January 27, at 2 p.m. Admission is $10 general and $5 for students, staff, seniors, and alumni. Romantic Rarities II Paul Smith, with piano duo Szervanszky/Cavaye and guest violist George Thomson, will perform Hector Berlioz' Harold in Italy in Chabrier's arrangement for one piano/four hands and viola, and Camille Saint Saens' two piano transcription of the Piano Sonata in B minor by Franz Liszt. In addition to performing, Paul Smith will also be directing this production. Performances are scheduled at the following venues:
Theatre A benefit for the COM Drama Scholarship Fund, Improv – Holiday Foibles, produced by Carla Zilbersmith, will be presented on December 6, 7, and 8 at 8 p.m. and December 9 at 2 p.m. in the Studio Theatre. Admission will be a $10 donation at the door with open seating. Dance Fall Works and Works in Progress will be presented on Friday, December 7, at 12 noon in the COM Dance Studio, Kentfield Campus. Admission is free. The Fall Musical Theatre Cabaret, a benefit show for the Dance Program, will be performed on Friday, December 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the COM Dance Studio, Kentfield Campus. Admission will be a $5 donation at the door. Performing Arts Department A Performing Arts Department combined production of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be offered on February 29, March 1, 7, 8, 14, and 15 at 8 p.m. and March 9 and 16 at 2 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre. This production will be directed by James Dunn, with musical direction by Tara Flandreau and choreography by Sandra Tanner. It is set to the music of Felix Mendelssohn and will be performed by the COM Orchestra. Tickets are $18 for general and $15 for students, seniors, COM staff, and alumni. To audition for A Midsummer Night’s Dream, prepare a two-minute comic Shakespearean monolog (not from Dream) and come to the open audition on Saturday, December 1, at 10 a.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre, room FA 150. Callbacks will be on Tuesday, December 4, at 7 p.m.
