Progress report submitted to WASC

A report on COM’s progress addressing WASC’s recommendations for improvement has been submitted to the accrediting organization by the Superintendent/President’s Office. The report documents the great progress that COM has made over the past year. The full report is attached to this email and also is available on the college Intranet and is listed under the Accreditation heading titled Progress Report to WASC (10/12/06). Representatives from WASC will be on campus November 13 meeting with groups and individuals of their choosing. A meeting schedule will be included in an upcoming Monday Briefing. Many thanks to all who have participated over the last year in addressing WASC’s recommendations and special thanks to Dr. Bernie Blackman, accreditation liaison, for his help preparing the report.

COM approves new Environmental Science Certificate

The College of Marin Curriculum Committee has just approved the Basic Certificate in Environmental Science. With this addition COM joins the list of community colleges with officially-recognized environmental science programs. The new certificate unites other existing COM programs in related areas, such as the Natural History Certificate. It is anticipated that additional complementary certificates will be developed making COM a recognized leader in environmental science curriculum. Suggested future certificates include: ecological restoration, green building, land management, and agroecology.

District Modernization Committee Meeting

The next District Modernization Committee meeting will be held on Monday, October 23, 2006, from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., in OH 108 at the Kentfield Campus. District Modernization Meetings are open meetings. At the beginning of each meeting time is set aside for open discussion from visitors. Modernization: Sample restroom partitions installed at KTD

Four bathroom stalls have been replaced in the Student Services Building women’s Restroom 245, and two stalls have been replaced in the Student Services Building in men’s Restroom 140. Based on discussions of viable restroom partition products in late spring, the Interiors Subcommittee recommended that products be installed on a test basis. The products have been donated by the manufacturers through local sales representatives (Stephen Stipher arranged for Stipher & Associates to donate the Columbia product in the women’s restroom and Stacey Ver on behalf Edwards & Associates arranged for the Bobrick product to be installed in the men’s restroom). KUDOS!

The paintings of Linda Lieberman, ESL credit instructor, are showing at the Mill Valley Public Library in a solo show entitled “Local Color: Marin Views.” Mostly composed of plein air paintings, the show will run through November 29, 2006. The Mill Valley Public Library is located at 375 Throckmorton Ave., Mill Valley. Call 389-4292 ext. 203 for hours and directions.

ASCOM President Hoa-long Tam took initiative and volunteered extra weekend time to help make student identification cards (ID). The Associated Students of College of Marin have generated $7,385.75 in Student ID funds this year, which is an all time record.

Free tutoring is available for COM students

Please share the following information about the Tutoring Center with your students:

  • Tutoring is free for students;
  • All peer tutors are faculty recommended;
  • Applications for tutoring are available in the Tutoring Center (LC 160 - down the hall from the library);
  • Drop-in tutoring schedules are posted in the Tutoring Center and are based on tutor and student availability.

Additional distance education testing hours for fall

Wednesday evening Testing Office hours in Kentfield will be extended from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday hours are from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at both KTD and IVC on the following dates:

  • Saturday, October 28,
  • Saturday, November 4,
  • Saturday, November 11,
  • Saturday, November 18, and
  • Saturday, December 9.

TESTING LOCATIONS
For the remainder of this semester, extended DE testing will be offered at the KTD Testing Office and at IVC in the Internet Café in Building 12.

The COM Center for Regenerative Design presents a COMmunity Profile conversation with Michelle Kaufmann, October 27, 2006 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Fusselman Hall, Room 120, at the Kentfield Campus. Michelle will share her quest to create cost-effective, thoughtfully designed, green buildings that are accessible to more people. Examples of such buildings include the Glidehouse and Breezehouse. Also, meet College of Marin Architecture Instructor Mark Gorrell as he shares his perspective on green architecture. This event will be moderated by visionary architect and Co-Director of COM’s Center for Regenerative Design (CRD) Sim Van der Ryn, and educator, author and Co-Director of CRD, Andres Edwards. AGS is sponsoring a delicious Halloween Bake Sale, October 31, 2006, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Learning Center quad. Proceeds will benefit AGS.

The ASEC Emeritus Center is hosting an art exhibit featuring work by COM artists, including paintings in oil, encaustic, water color, pastel, and acrylic. At each entrance to the Center you will find a list of the artists, the names of their paintings, and prices, in case you are doing your holiday shopping early this year! The center is open weekdays. The Fine Arts Gallery is featuring a new exhibit of ceramics and drawings by Visual and Fine Arts Instructor Bill Abright titled Mask. The exhibit runs through November 10. The exhibit is open to the public free of charge. Gallery hours are weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibit has been designed by COM’s Fine Arts Gallery Director Andrea Antonaccio. Deadline to apply for IEP Scholarships

The deadline to submit applications for scholarships for the spring 2007 Intensive English Program is fast approaching. Please be aware that only completed applications will be accepted at the ESL office in Kentfield or the IEP office at the Indian Valley Campus. The complete application must be received by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 14, 2006 in the ESL Office, Harlan Center 123, Kentfield Campus, OR by 9:00 a.m. Thursday, November 16, 2006 in the Intensive English Program, Ohlone 19, Room 141, Indian Valley Campus. How to update or create a webpage

Send an e-mail request, including your name, or the name and e-mail address of the person responsible for page content in your department, and the date that you wish the information to be published, to Senior Creative Designer Hector Seguel. Please specify the following in the body of the e-mail:

  • URL of the page to be edited or where you would like the link to your new page to be placed.
  • Revisions to the existing page or a copy of the new file that you want to publish in PDF or html format.
  • Once the edits have been made or your new page has been published, you will receive an e-mail with a link to the page for review. For more information contact Hector at extension 7524.

Educational Excellence Innovation Fund Call for Submissions

You are invited to submit a proposal for an Educational Excellence Innovation Fund (EEIF) grant. The EEIF will provide seed money encouraging College of Marin’s faculty and staff to “dream out loud” by developing innovative ideas to improve teaching and learning at the College of Marin. Faculty proposals should be submitted to U.D.W.C. per Article 8.3 of the UP.M. contract by November 1, 2006 for projects to begin spring 2007. Administrators and staff must submit their proposals to the President’s Office by November 1, 2006 for projects to begin spring 2007. The EEIF is one of the Board of Trustees’ Annual Priorities. EEIF is partially funded by the general fund and by private funds raised by COM’s President’s Circle. EEIF funds provide opportunities for excellence in teaching, learning, institutional planning, professional development, and support for academic and culturally diverse programs and services.
