Columbia University Recruits COM Transfer Students Columbia University is recruiting nontraditional students who are prepared for the rigors of a traditional Ivy League education, and COM students have a proven track record. In recent years, four COM transfer students have graduated from, or are now attending, Columbia’s School of General Studies. Kari Blowers, Senior Admissions Manager, School of General Studies, Columbia University, held an information session at COM last Wednesday for students interested in continuing their education at a four-year university. COM Provides Gratis Dental and Medical Services to Local Head Start Children Approximately 180 local Head Start children were seen by Dental Assisting Program students and RN Program students last week. The children received a free dental screening and fluoride varnish for their teeth. Six local dentists participated in the examinations and donated the fluoride varnish. The RN Program students performed a physical assessment of the children that included checking height, weight, and vital signs and performing a motor skills evaluation. They also charted, used behavior modification for behavior problems, interpreted for Spanish-speaking families, provided floss instruction, and sterilized instruments. For many of the children this was their first experience with health care services. The Dental Assisting Program and the RN Program extend their thanks to the Harlan Center faculty, staff, and students for their patience regarding the increased noise level! Special kudos to the following wonderful dentists who have private practices in Marin County and adjusted busy schedules to volunteer their services.

Software Purchasing – Limited Time Offer for Faculty and Staff The Foundation for California Community Colleges and Adobe® announced this week a limited time offer for California Community College faculty and staff to purchase discounted software through the Contractual License Program Student Option. The program, introduced in 2006, enables students to purchase fully licensed software at up to 85 percent off the retail price. Faculty and staff have been asking for the ability to take advantage of the program since it was introduced, and now they can until March 15, 2008. During this time, faculty and staff will receive the preset discount price on Adobe® Creative Suite® 3 Design Premium, Adobe® Creative Suite® 3 Master Collection, Adobe® Acrobat 8.0 Professional, and other qualifying software purchases. The partnership between the Foundation and Adobe began several years ago, making it possible for community colleges, and later students, to purchase state-of-the-art design software at prices well below retail through exclusive reseller ComputerLand. As the sole official auxiliary to the largest higher education system in the world, the Foundation brings together the purchasing power of 72 districts, totaling 109 schools, to secure the lowest possible price for institutions and individuals.
