College of Marin Submits Focused Midterm Report to WASC A focused midterm report was submitted to the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges, Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) on Friday, October 12. The report focused on WASC’s Recommendation #3 requesting that “the college implement an institutional planning process based on agreed upon institutional values, a redefined mission, and measurable outcomes, that is strategic, systematic, data-driven, evidence based, focused on student learning and holds responsible parties accountable for actions and timelines.” An accreditation team will be visiting the college on Thursday, November 8. Dr. Bernie Blackman, Director of Organizational Development and Planning and College of Marin Accreditation Liaison Officer (ALO), is the primary report coordinator who organized, edited, and assembled the report. The report is available on the college Intranet under the “Accreditation” heading. COM New Construction and Modernization Community Forums Faculty, staff, students and community members are invited to attend College of Marin New Construction and Modernization Update Community Forums (time and location details below). Presenter V-Anne Chernock, Director of Modernization, will talk about how bond dollars are being effectively used to revitalize the Kentfield and Indian Valley Campuses. Attendees will view current site maps and phasing/construction plans. A question and answer session will follow the presentation. Your participation is important as we move forward to enhance the educational environment for our students, staff, and community. The forums are open to the public and are free of charge.
Alumni Baseball Game COM is seeking all past baseball players for an alumni game on October 21. The game is set to start at 11 a.m. on the campus baseball field and will be followed by a barbecue. Commencement 2008 Commencement 2008 will take place on Saturday, May 17, 2008 (the week before finals), at 10 a.m. on the Kentfield Campus lawn. This change is due to the modernization of the gym. Hold the Date! Please hold Thursday, December 13, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. for an all-campus holiday party at Willie’s, 799 College Avenue. Additional details will be provided at a later date. Celebrate Diversity! In recognition of the Second Annual Disability Awareness Month, a panel discussion on how technology and accessibility help those with disabilities overcome their challenges is being presented by the Disabled Students Rights Club and Chris Schultz. The event is scheduled for November 1 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Student Services Center Cafeteria at KTD. A variety of people who have disabilities will talk about how technology and access help them manage an everyday, normal life. There will be about five speakers representing disabilities ranging from severe to moderate. One of the speakers is a blind woman who will perform on the piano. All students, faculty and staff are welcome. The event is free and complimentary food and refreshments will be provided. This event will be “accessible” for disabled students. Brown Bag Theatre One of the Drama Department's busiest programs is the Directors’ Workshop, otherwise known as Brown Bag Theatre. On October 25, November 15, and December 13, from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m., the department will present free, student-directed performing arts events in the Fine Arts Building Rooms 134—136 at KTD. For more information, call Robin Jackson at (415) 485-9555 (x7555). A.W.O.L. is Back! COM’s very own Improv Troupe, A.W.O.L. (Actors Without Lines), is back and ready to tickle your funny bone with a series of riotous performances. A.W.O.L. will perform every Wednesday from 12 noon to 1 p.m. for free in the Studio Theatre. On Friday, September 21, and Saturdays, October 20, November 3, and November 17, performances will be at 8 p.m. in the Studio Theatre at KTD. Tickets for the Friday and Saturday shows will be a $10 donation at the door with doors opening at 7:30 p.m. Open seating is first come, first served. Proceeds from the performances benefit either the Drama Scholarship Fund or the Drama Student Fellowship Fund. ASCOM Dinner and Toy Drive ASCOM is coordinating a holiday dinner and toy drive for at need families and single parents. The dinner and toy distribution are scheduled for Thursday, November 15, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Student Services Center Cafeteria. A complete meal, including turkey and all the extras, will be provided for around 300 people. ASCOM is contacting local businesses for donations, but additional donors and sponsors are welcome. EEIF Proposal Guidelines for Academic Year 2007-2008 The Educational Excellence Innovation Fund (EEIF) provides seed money that encourages College of Marin’s faculty and staff to dream out loud. For an EEIF proposal form, please email Betty Schlaepfer. Please use the following guidelines when submitting your proposal. Please note that the submission deadline for fall is October 19, 2007. The Educational Excellence Innovation Fund (EEIF) has four areas of concentration: 1. Leverage for Fund Development
2. New programs reflecting business and workforce training
3. New pedagogies, learning styles, and learning communities
4. Program revitalization
The proposal should include the following information: Prospective applicants should discuss their proposals with their colleagues and obtain the approval with their division dean/departmental supervisor prior to submission. Interdisciplinary proposals are encouraged. Applications should include a brief proposal (no more than 5 pages in length) using the following headings:
For Administrators/Staff: Proposals should be submitted to the President’s Office by October 19, 2007 for Fall 2008 awards. Awards will be announced no later than December 10, 2007. Proposals should be submitted to the President’s Office by March 14, 2008 for projects to begin Spring 2009. Awards will be announced in May. For Faculty: Proposals should be submitted to U.D.W.C. per Article 8.3 of UPM contract by October 19, 2007 for projects to begin Fall 2008. Awards will be announced no later than December 10, 2007. Awards will be announced in May. 2007 Flu Shots for only $20 Following is the schedule for the 2007 flu shots, which will be available to anyone over 18 years of age for a $20 fee. COM Fine Arts Gallery Show The Fine Arts Gallery is presenting a show titled Spatial Relations featuring sculpture by COM students Susan Dubin-McNeil, Mary Huntsman, and Sharon Paster. Site-specific installation is being done by student Kathryn Grothe, first place winner in College of Marin’s Annual Spring 2007 Student Exhibition. The show, which began on October 8, will run through November 8, and gallery hours are weekdays from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Plan on attending this fascinating show to support our artistic and talented students! Wine and Dine with Live Owls! Professor Joe Mueller will be hosting the 3rd Annual Evening with Owls, a benefit for WildCare’s Hungry Owl Project. This event is not only a fundraiser for this much needed and ever expanding project, but it is also a way for people to enjoy an evening in the presence and magical spirit of owls. The event will take place on Thursday, November 15, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Marin Art and Garden Center, 350 Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, Ross, and the cost is $55 per person. Colonel Wright resigned from the U.S. Foreign Service in March 2003 over several disagreements with the Bush administration, including their decision to attack Iraq, the lack of effort in resolving the Israel-Palestinian situation, and unnecessary curtailment of civil liberties. Theatre Dancing at Lughnasa, Brian Friel’s award-winning play, will be performed on October 19, and 20 at 8 p.m. and October 21 at 2 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre. Fall Works and Works in Progress will be presented on Friday, December 7, at 12 noon in the COM Dance Studio, Kentfield Campus. Admission is free. Performing Arts Department A Performing Arts Department combined production of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be offered on February 29, March 1, 7, 8, 14, and 15 at 8 p.m. and March 9 and 16 at 2 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre. This production will be directed by James Dunn, with musical direction by Tara Flandreau and choreography by Sandra Tanner. It is set to the music of Felix Mendelssohn and will be performed by the COM Orchestra. Tickets are $18 for general and $15 for students, seniors, COM staff, and alumni.
