COM New Construction and Modernization Update Community Forums

The Marin Community College District is presenting two College of Marin New Construction and Modernization Update Community Forums (time and location details below).  V-Anne Chernock, Director of Modernization,  will be giving the presentation where attendees will learn how bond dollars are being effectively and efficiently used to revitalize the Kentfield and Indian Valley Campuses, be able to view current site maps and phasing/construction plans, and take part in a question and answer period.  Your participation is important as we move forward to enhance the educational environment for our students, staff, and community.  The forums are open to the public and are free of charge.

ASCOM Dinner and Toy Drive

ASCOM is coordinating a holiday dinner and toy drive for low income families and single parents. The dinner and toy distribution are scheduled for Thursday, November 15, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in front of the Kentfield Campus bookstore.  A complete meal, including turkey and all the extras, will be provided for around 300 people!  ASCOM is contacting local businesses for donations, but additional donors and sponsors are welcome.  Please contact Mike Sjoblom, Assistant Student Activities Director, at (415) 485-9390 (x7390) if you are interested in being a donor and/or sponsor for this worthwhile community event.

UC/CSU Application and Personal Statement Workshops

The Counseling Department is hosting UC/CSU application and personal statement workshops which began on October 3rd.  Counselors will guide students through the online applications for UC and CSU.  The presentation will cover each screen of the application process, highlighting the parts that should not be missed.  Questions and answers are welcome.  Please encourage students to contact the Counseling Department at (415) 485-9436 (x7436) for dates or have them stop by to pick up a schedule.

Commencement 2008

Commencement 2008 will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2008, at 10 a.m. on the Kentfield Campus lawn. This change is due to the modernization of the gym.

EEIF Proposal Guidelines for Academic Year 2007-2008

The Educational Excellence Innovation Fund (EEIF) provides seed money that encourages College of Marin’s faculty and staff to dream out loud.  For an EEIF proposal form, please email Betty Schlaepfer.  Please use the following guidelines when submitting your proposal. Please note that the submission deadline for fall is October 19, 2007.

The Educational Excellence Innovation Fund (EEIF) has four areas of concentration:

1. Leverage for Fund Development

  •  Provides start-up planning and financial support to faculty and staff in devising programs and services.
  •  Closely linked to college/district strategic goals/priorities.
  •  Possesses significant potential for development of linkages with external organizations such as business, industry, government agencies and community organizations.
  •  Has a high level of potential for procurement of additional private or public sector funding as a result of Educational Excellence Innovation Fund support.
  •  Coordinated with the activities of the Educational Excellence Innovation Fund, the President’s Circle, College of Marin Foundation.

2. New programs reflecting business and workforce training

  •  Addresses emerging work force issues in the Bay Area and/or Marin County.
  •  Provides learning opportunities into the environmental, medical, or technological work force.
  •  Increases career opportunities and skills development.

3. New pedagogies, learning styles, and learning communities

  •  Introduces new teaching methods, such as utilizing technology and web-based instruction.
  •  Implements faculty development of educational web sites.
  •  Creates distance learning and on-line options for instructional delivery.

4. Program revitalization

  •  Adds new components to existing programs.
  •  Creates partnerships with business to expand program offerings.

The proposal should include the following information:

Prospective applicants should discuss their proposals with their colleagues and obtain the approval with their division dean/departmental supervisor prior to submission. Interdisciplinary proposals are encouraged.  Applications should include a brief proposal (no more than 5 pages in length) using the following headings:

 1.  One-paragraph “proposal summary” of the project

 2.  Introduction/Need for Project/Relationship to College or District Goals

 3.  Project Goals/Objectives

 4.  Proposed Activities

 5.  Description/Qualifications for Project Coordinators and Others Involved

 6.  Statement of Potential for Future Project Development/Sustainability

 7.  Description of External Linkages to be Pursued (if applicable)

 8.  Proposed Budget—Provide an Estimate of Assigned Time or Other Expenses

      (Please make sure the proposed budget includes detailed information, including costs for

      teaching units, supplies, and other ancillary expenses.)

 9.  A timeline for the project

 10. Evaluation/Accountability Report submitted at the conclusion of the project.               

For Administrators/Staff:

Proposals should be submitted to the President’s Office by October 19, 2007 for Fall 2008 awards. Awards will be announced no later than December 10, 2007.

Proposals should be submitted to the President’s Office by March 14, 2008 for projects to begin Spring 2009.  Awards will be announced in May.

For Faculty:

Proposals should be submitted to U.D.W.C. per Article 8.3 of UPM contract by

October 19, 2007 for projects to begin Fall 2008. Awards will be announced no later than December 10, 2007.

Proposals should be submitted to U.D.W.C. per Article 8.3 of UPM contract by

March 14, 2008 for projects to begin Spring 2009. Awards will be announced in May.

2007 Flu Shots for only $20 – IVC Date Added

Following is the schedule for the 2007 flu shots, which will be available to anyone over 18 years of age for a $20 fee. (We do not bill insurance plans and are not a Medicare provider.) COM Fine Arts Gallery Show

The Fine Arts Gallery is presenting a show titled Spatial Relations featuring sculpture by COM students Susan Dubin-McNeil, Mary Huntsman, and Sharon Paster.  Site-specific installation is being done by student Kathryn Grothe, first place winner in College of Marin’s Annual Spring 2007 Student Exhibition. The show will run from October 8 through November 8, and gallery hours are weekdays from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.  A reception is scheduled for Tuesday, October 9, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.  Plan on attending this fascinating show to support our artistic and talented students!

Wine and Dine with Live Owls!

Professor Joe Mueller will be hosting the 3rd Annual Evening with Owls, a benefit for WildCare’s Hungry Owl Project. This event is not only a fundraiser for this much needed and ever expanding project, but it is also a way for people to enjoy an evening in the presence and magical spirit of owls.  The event will take place on Thursday, November 15, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Marin Art and Garden Center, 350 Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, Ross, and the cost is $55 per person.  To learn more about this event, print a reservation form, or get sponsor information, go to the Hungry Owl website.  Last year’s event sold out, so reserve your place now.

Dissent: Voices of Conscience (NOTE: New Location)

Colonel Ann Wright, formerly a member of the U.S. Foreign Service, is scheduled to speak on Tuesday, October 16, from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Student Services Building Cafeteria.  Colonel Wright resigned from the U.S. Foreign Service in March 2003 over several disagreements with the Bush administration, including their decision to attack Iraq, the lack of effort in resolving the Israel-Palestinian situation, and unnecessary curtailment of civil liberties. COM Theatre and Dance Performance Schedule 2007-2008

 

Theatre

Dancing at Lughnasa, Brian Friel’s award-winning play, will be performed on October 12, 13, 19, and 20 at 8 p.m. and October 14 and 21 at 2 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre. The play will be directed by Molly Noble. Tickets are $15 for general and $12 for students, seniors, COM staff, and alumni. For reserved seating, please call the box office at (415) 485-9385.

A benefit for the COM Drama Scholarship Fund, Improv – Holiday Foibles, produced by Carla Zilbersmith, will be presented on December 6, 7, and 8 at 8 p.m. and December 9 at 2 p.m. in the Studio Theatre. Admission will be a $10 donation at the door with open seating.

Dance

Performances of the fall dance concert, Signatures of Motion, are scheduled for November 2, 3, 9, and 10 at 8 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre. Tickets are $15 for general and $10 for students, seniors, COM staff, and alumni. For tickets, please call the box office at (415) 485-9385.

 

Fall Works and Works in Progress will be presented on Friday, December 7, at 12 noon in the COM Dance Studio, Kentfield Campus. Admission is free.

The Fall Musical Theatre Cabaret, a benefit show for the Dance Program, will be performed on Friday, December 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the COM Dance Studio, Kentfield Campus. Admission will be a $5 donation at the door.

 

Theatre/Dance

A Performing Arts Department combined production of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be offered on February 29, March 1, 7, 8, 14, and 15 at 8 p.m. and March 9 and 16 at 2 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre. This production will be directed by James Dunn, with musical direction by the music faculty, and choreography by the dance faculty. Tickets are $18 for general and $15 for students, seniors, COM staff, and alumni.  For reserved seating, please call the box office at (415) 485-9385.

To audition for A Midsummer Night’s Dream, prepare a two-minute Shakespearean monolog and come to the open audition on Saturday, December 1, at 10 a.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre, room FA 150.  Callbacks will be on Tuesday, December 4, at 7 p.m.
