Distance Education Support Center (DESC) - Testing in fall 2007 (Please note new location in LC 121) Make-up and distance education testing will begin on August 28 and continue through December 15. The fall hours for the Distance Education Support Center (DESC) are:
If you have questions about testing, please email faye.mueller@yahoo.com. Please see attached files for more information about scheduling appointments and information about make-up testing. There have been some changes at COM in the locations where testing services are offered. Until spring 2007, all testing took place in the Testing Office in SS 138, including placement testing and other tests required by the college, as well as make-up testing for courses. To enable the Testing Office to concentrate on placement testing, the College opened the Distance Education Support Center (DESC), located in Room 121 in the Media Center (in the LRC Building). While all College placement tests will still take place in the Testing Office, make-up tests for distance education and face-to-face courses will be scheduled and proctored through DESC. Please see the table below for the location of various kinds of testing. Make-up testing for face-to-face courses may be scheduled when students cannot make the regular testing time because of circumstances beyond their control. Retaking of a test, if allowed by an instructor, should be proctored by the instructor unless there has been an academic intervention such as tutoring or a directed study session that will allow students to authentically improve their performance. In cases where there has been an academic intervention that the instructor has approved, retests may be scheduled in DESC. DESC staff will also be available to assist students with questions about DE courses and to offer help with study skills and strategies for success in distance and technology-assisted courses.
Bond Modernization Update At its August 28 Board meeting, the Board will be asked to take action on 18 contract items for the modernization program. This number is exceeded only by the 20 pre-authorizations approved at the Board special July 24 meeting; since the beginning of 2007, the Board has acted on an average of a dozen modernization items per meeting. Of the 18 actions, several are ratifications of items pre-authorized in July, including contracts for a restroom in Larkspur Annex, design of roof repairs to the Old Science Center, and replacement of a boiler at the IVC pool. Several other consulting contracts are being renewed for 2007 – 2008. During the pre-board meeting afternoon workshop (2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.) the Board will briefly review a new conceptual design for the Science/Math/Central Plant Complex as developed by ED2 International, who joined the project only a few months ago. A more thorough design presentation is scheduled for September 18. This high level of Board activity since June illustrates the intensity of the bond program’s activity over the summer months. Infrastructure work has been accompanied by completion of two Draft Environmental Impact Reports, commencement of negotiations for a Project Stabilization Agreement, and registration of six buildings for LEED certification.
Phone System Upgrade The upgrade to all three Mitel phone systems will take place on September 9 starting at 4 a.m. Both campuses will be without phone service, including voice mail and the automated attendant greeting, for approximately four hours. This will not effect touchtone or access to the College via the internet. The campus police on duty officer will be informed when the work is finished. If you have any questions, please call Chris Edmondson, Network Administrator, at 7300 or email him at chris.edmondson@marin.edu.
