COM Welcomes New Dean of Math and Sciences James “Jim” Arnold, Ph.D. is COM’s new Dean of Math and Sciences. In this position, Dr. Arnold is responsible for the departments of Mathematics, Life, and Earth Sciences; Physical Sciences; Social Sciences; Behavioral Sciences; and Physical Education and Athletics. Erik Dunmire, who served as the interim dean, will return to his teaching post after a sabbatical. Dr. Arnold comes to us with 12 years of administrative experience in the community college environment, primarily at the Oregon University System Chancellor’s Office where he worked in the Academic Affairs Division as the primary liaison between universities and community colleges in that state. Most recently, he held appointments at Mt. Hood Community College as Dean of Science and Technology and at Umpqua Community College as Dean of Math, Science and Liberal Arts. Arnold has a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire, a Master of Science degree in Chemistry from Oregon State University, and a Doctorate in Higher Education Administration from Indiana University. Interim Dean of Student Development and Special Services Nick Chang will serve as the Interim Dean of Student Development and Special Services. He comes to us from City College of San Francisco where he held various positions including Dean of Matriculation and Title III Coordinator, Interim Dean of Counseling Services, Acting Associate Dean of Special Programs, and Campus Dean/Director. Chang obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Ohio Wesleyan University and his Master of Arts degree in Counseling from the University of San Francisco. He also did post graduate doctoral studies in multicultural education at the University of San Francisco. Interim Director of Physical Education and Athletics Philip Maas is the Interim Director of PE and Athletics replacing Jim Brovelli who retired last spring. Maas has been a teacher and coach in California for 35 years and spent the last 25 years coaching football at the College of the Siskiyous in Weed, California. His coaching background includes nine years in track and field, and he was the Athletic Director at COS from 1996 to 2001. Mr. Maas also taught all levels of Spanish for many years. Since retiring from teaching and coaching in 2004, he coached football in Graz, Austria for two seasons and continued to coach at COS. Tuesday, August 14 (Independent Flex Day) Banner Self Service Finance APPROVER Training 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Location: IVC, Room IS 201 This workshop is intended for Department Chairs and others who have approval authority for departmental budgets. Banner Self Service Finance REQUISITIONER Training 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Location: IVC, Room IS 201 This workshop is intended for those who initiate purchase orders and budget transfers and need to be trained on the Banner Self Service Finance system. Wednesday, August 15 (Independent Flex Day) SLO Orientation & Create Your SLO 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Location: KTD, Room BC 101 This is an opportunity for faculty and staff to learn about developing SLOs. The first half of the workshop will be an orientation to student learning outcomes. During the second half, participants are invited to work on their SLO with guidance from SLO Coordinator, Patty O'Keefe. Bring your current syllabus, Title V documents or other materials to work on. Computers will be available. Modernization Update 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Location: KTD, Room OH 96 Update on the College's Modernization projects presented by Director of Modernization, V-Anne Chernock. Thursday, August 16 (Independent Flex Day) Coping with Student Misconduct in the College Classroom and Campus Environment 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Location: KTD, Room OH 96 Presentation by Dr. Jerry Amada, former Director of Mental Health Services, City College San Francisco and author of two books on this subject. The workshop will address the following areas of concern: how to identify the disruptive student; strategies for dealing with potentially disruptive students, rights and prerogatives in dealing with disruptive students, and how to document and report incidents. Banner Implementation Overview 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Location: KTD, Room OH 96 Overview and update on the Banner software implementation presented by Vice President of College Operations, Al Harrison. Friday, August 17 (Mandatory Flex Day) College Convocation 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Location: FA Theater Annual President’s Address and College Convocation for all faculty and staff. Includes update on Program Review and the college budget.
