Have a Great Summer!

I hope that you will join us at Commencement and help celebrate the accomplishments of not only our students, but also of our faculty and staff who have worked hard to help make the dream of achieving a college education a reality. This past spring has been a particularly busy one for many of us here and I truly believe that together we have accomplished great things.  The recent Grand Jury report summarizes some of the positive changes that are taking place at COM. “Administration, faculty, the board, staff, and students can take pride in having recently made significant progress in major problem areas. In particular, there is renewed focus on facilities modernization, enrollment, and accreditation....More needs to be done, however,” said the Marin County Grand Jury Report, April 10, 2007. As we shift into the somewhat slower pace that summer affords us, I hope that you will have the opportunity to recharge your batteries and enjoy some time with your loved ones. I look forward to working with those of you who will be here this summer. I also look forward to working again with all of you this upcoming fall semester as we continue to accomplish great things for the College of Marin.

Governance Review Council Survey

College of Marin launched a new participatory governance system (PGS) in fall 2005. The purpose of the governance system is to provide a means for faculty, staff, students, and administrators to participate in college decision-making.

The Governance Review Council asks all members of the College of Marin staff, faculty, and administration to complete a short survey.

The purpose of this survey is to assess the awareness level of the college community regarding the PGS and governance resources that are available.

All responses are anonymous and the results will be aggregated and reported in the Monday Briefing.

The survey is only 10 questions and takes less than five minutes. To access the survey, go to this web page and click on the start button to begin the survey. For more information, please contact Barbara David, Staff Assistant, Organizational Development & Planning, College of Marin, at Ext. 7570.

Kudos

The Marin Simulation Center opened on Thursday, May 17, 2007, at the Indian Valley Campus thanks to the hard work of faculty, staff, and project partners. The new center, the result of an extraordinary collaboration of regional hospitals and learning institutions, is a state-of-the-art emergency simulation facility that will provide vital training opportunities to healthcare students and emergency workers in the area. Big kudos to Nanda Schorske, Dean of Workforce Development and College-Community Partnerships, for her extraordinary leadership; Roz Hartman, Director of Health Sciences, for her tireless work on the project; and to all of the faculty and staff who made the event possible.

The 1st Transfer Recognition Reception held on May 10 was a big success. Family and friends gathered to see 25 students recognized for their achievements. Three COM alumni from UC-Berkeley attended the event, including Manny Manriquez, Connie Bustinza, and Cynthia Ladd-Viti. The Welcome was given by Josué Hoyos, Dean of Student Services, and Hoa-Long Tam, ASCOM President spoke, along with transferring students, Pia E. Oestlien and Kelea Sandfort. Janice Austin, Transfer and Career Center, was Master of Ceremonies.

At a special ceremony on Friday, May 18, at 5 p.m., in the Student Center at the Kentfield campus, the College of Marin Foundation (COMF), at its 43rd Scholarship Awards event, distributed 122 scholarships totaling more than $95,000 to 105 deserving College of Marin students. Dr. Francis Parnell, COMF President, gave the welcome address. Margaret A. Elliott, COMF Executive Director, presented the awards to the students.
