Program Review Special Thanks

Many thanks to those of you who participated in the preparation of program reviews for the Basic Skills Initiative, the Credit, Noncredit, and Intensive Programs in English as a Second Language, the English Skills and English Basic Skills programs, English and Humanities, Journalism, Multimedia Studies, the Technology Work Plan, and Testing Center.  The Academic Senate Committees and the Governance Committees have begun studying the reviews so that they can priority rank program needs. These recommendations will be passed on to IPC and then to the Budget Committee.

A special thank you goes to Carol Adair, Blaze Woodlief and Sara McKinnon for rewriting their reviews into the electronic template that will be used as the beta test template. Also, special thanks to Patty O’Keefe for her excellent work on SLOs and on the Boot Camp.

Kudos

College of Marin English Professor James Tipton’s novel titled Annette Vallon: A Novel of the French Revolution, published by Harper Collins, November 2007, was recently reviewed in USA Today. “James Tipton's marvelous novel Annette Vallon proves Frenchwomen through history have been delectably soignée and self-confident, even when facing the blood-soaked terror of the Revolution,” wrote Deirdre Donahue, USA Today.

Allen Taylor to hold a benefit performance for Carla Zilbersmith

Allen Taylor will hold a benefit performance of his one-man show, Walkin’ Talkin’ Bill Hawkins—In Search Of My Father, for Carla Zilbersmith on February 17, at 3 p.m. at Afro-Solo Theatre, The African American Art and Cultural Complex, 762 Fulton Street, San Francisco.  For tickets,
e-mail kaila@kailaflexer.com.  The box office at the theatre is not selling these special tickets

Walkin' Talkin' Bill Hawkins
is an inspiring, heartfelt story of self-discovery that celebrates Black culture and the rich legacy of Black radio. The 90-minute solo show tells the intimate story of Taylor's life-long search for his father, Bill Hawkins, the first Black disc jockey in Cleveland, Ohio. Infused with the lively sounds of rhythm and blues, gospel and jazz music that made Bill Hawkins so acclaimed, Taylor skillfully portrays a range of richly defined characters in the journey to discover his roots. This one-man show received the San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics' Circle Award for Best Solo Performance in 2006 and was critically acclaimed in Cleveland in 2007 where it inspired the posthumous induction of Bill Hawkins into the Radio/Television Broadcasters Hall of Fame of Ohio.

In Memorium

One of our longstanding CSEA employees, Rolf Weber, passed away last week. Rolf was our box office cashier for many years. He truly loved working at the college and did so for the past ten years. A former travel agent, he started at COM in 1998.  His daughter, Andrea Weber, has been a part-time teacher in the Theatre Arts Department for the past several years. Rolf grew up in Germany during World War II and would often tell stories about surviving the bombings, etc.  His wife, Waltraud Weber, who predeceased him, was a world renowned potter.  He will be missed. There will be a memorial service TBA.  Meanwhile, flowers and/or condolences may be sent to Rolf’s other daughter, Kai Weber, 77 Edgecroft Rd., Kensington, CA, 94707.
