Addendum to Progress Report submitted to WASC

On Friday, May 9, 2008, an Addendum to the college’s recent Progress Report was submitted to the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (ACCJC/WASC). Both the Addendum and the March 28, 2008, Progress Report respond to the accrediting agency’s final requirement. (Four out of five of ACCJC/WASC’s recommendations have been previously addressed.) The addendum focuses on the results of program review in association with planning and budgeting processes. The addendum highlights the use of data and research to improve planning, determine priorities for resource allocation, restructure academic programs, integrate planning and budgeting outcomes, and improve support for educational planning and research. Copies of the addendum will be available this week online at http://www.marin.edu/com/ODP/Accreditation.htm and also on the intranet.

Modernization Program Update

Demolition and hazardous materials abatement within the Diamond PE Center buildings continues and removal of asbestos-containing roofing begins this week. You may see workers wearing protective gear. An Industrial Hygienist will monitor the project.

Geothermal Fields KTD & IVC

Drilling is complete in Parking Lot 6. Parking Lot 9 at the Kentfield Campus has been completely closed and drilling will continue through this week.

Also, the Sheriff’s new portable building should be in place at the Kentfield Campus early next week.

At the Indian Valley Campus geothermal drilling is progressing on schedule with approximately 70 holes complete. Drilling is expected to be finished by the end of the week. Trench work for horizontal piping installation also is underway. Noise mitigation measures have been increased and will continue to be monitored throughout the scope of the project.

12kV Utility Extension Project

The Contractor is on-site and has begun asphalt demolition. Activities next week include work on the fire road north of Pomo 1 and Pomo 2. Expect to see some trenching in the road between Parking Lots 2 and 3.

Swing Space at the Indian Valley Campus

The construction project for the new greenhouse and shade structure for the Environmental Landscape program (moving to IVC) is out to bid. Construction is scheduled to begin in early June.

Construction Notification

The remainder of Parking Lot 9 will be closed for the next 30 to 45 days. The area will be completely fenced off. Cones and other construction aids will be used to allow pedestrian and bike traffic to flow safely through the area of construction and connect to the Creek bike trail.

HVAC (heating, ventilating and air conditioning) units 4, 5, and 6 will be shut down until the end of the day Tuesday, May 13, 2008, as part of the Austin Science Center roof repairs project. This shutdown is to prevent fumes from silicone coating from circulating back into the building. MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) are available for review at the Swinerton Office, Kentfield Campus, in Building MS-3. All measures possible are being taken to ensure the safety of faculty, staff, and students. For more information, contact Swinerton Management and Consulting at (415) 884-3139.

COM Athletics

End of Season Results:

Two College of Marin Swimming and Diving team members earned All-American honors while placing in the top eight at the California Community College State Championships. The meet took place May 1 through May 3 at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, CA. Freshman Martin Malasky finished 6th in the men’s 200 yard freestyle (1:42.68), 7th in the 100 yard freestyle (:46.86), and 8th in the 50 yard freestyle (:21.09). All three swims were team records and qualified for All-American recognition. Sophomore Anna Brandwene finished 6th in the women’s three-meter diving competition (153.9 points) and 8th in the 1 meter diving competition (147.8 points). Her final scores also qualified her for All-American status.

The Mariner’s baseball season ended in the first round of playoffs, with a narrow 8-7 loss to Santa Rosa. Both teams played an exciting game and despite the last week’s loss, it was an overall great season for our team. Our Mariners showed great talent, heart, and stamina throughout the season.

Have a great week!
