Music and Laughter for a Good Cause Enjoy an evening of music and laughter while raising money for Drama instructor Carla Zilber-Smith, who was recently diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). Presented by Yoshi’s Jack London Square and Michael Zilber, this benefit will include performances by musical satirist, Roy Zimmerman, internationally renowned bassist Kai Eckhardt, the Michael Zilber-Billy Collins Project with Andy Kirshner, Kaila Flexer, The Jazzschool Composers Collective, and a special performance by Carla herself, performing music from her new CD, Extraordinary Renditions. The evening will be hosted by nationally acclaimed comedian David Allen Moss. For reservations and information please call (510) 238-9200 or visit YOSHIS. CSEA Equity Study Update Ewing and Associates has nearly completed drafts of revised job descriptions. The drafts are anticipated to be distributed to employees later this week. Participants in the study will have approximately a week and a half to comment on the drafts. The Advisory Committee (comprised of both CSEA and District representatives) will meet with Bill Ewing this Wednesday, April 16th. The committee will then determine comparable districts, updated timelines, and job evaluation methodology. This project is scheduled for completion mid-May 2008. Kudos College of Marin’s 12th Annual Latino College Awareness Day was a great success. Approximately 350 Latino high school students participated. Keynote speaker Dr. Francisco Rodriguez, President of Cosumnes River Community College, addressed the concerns of Latino students who are interested in pursuing college education and encouraged them to reach high. DJ Nica (Luis Calero), a former College of Marin student who is graduating from SF State University, also spoke at the event sharing his inspiration for others to succeed. The event was a great success thanks to faculty, media services, support staff, police officers, and the maintenance department. June Yokell and Mauricio and Cari Torres Benavides deserve particular acknowledgement for their hard work organizing this event. A special thanks to Dr. Arnulfo Cedillo for inviting Dr. Rodriguez. Annie Ricciuti, Jesse Harbison, Mike Klein, and Albert So deserve our thanks for their role in preparing program review documents for the WASC team visit. Printing the copies is labor intensive and requires a great deal of quality control and hands on maintenance of the machines. Kudos to ASCOM President Inna Shapiro and the ASCOM Board members including Cassandra Salisbury, Adrian Cheong, Helen Kennedy, Jessica Sutter, Mr. Todd McCleary, and Barbara Jackson from the Disabled Student’s Rights Club for their efforts in making WASC team members feel welcome on Tuesday, April 1. ASCOM funded the free breakfast and BBQ. Working together, they provided food and information making it a successful student involvement day. Music Real Vocal String Quartet The quartet, including COM faculty member Jessica Ivry, will play a brilliant and beautiful synthesis of world and roots music with jazz, classical, and pop sensibilities. Founded by an original member of the Turtle Island String Quartet, the group’s music is a stirring mix of genre-hopping originals and arrangements. Combining melodies and rhythms from Brazil, Ireland, Kenya, Mali, and the wide landscape of American musical traditions into the rich, blended voice of a virtuosic string quartet, RVSQ adds trademark vocal harmonies sung straight from the soul. Bach’s Singet dem Herrn, scored for double chorus and orchestra, is a work of exceptional scope and difficulty. The Te Deum is Handel’s intense and varied musical celebration of the victory of King George II at Dettingen. Also featured will be Handel’s royal favorite Zadok the Priest. The one hundred voice chorus will be joined by full orchestra and guest soloists Erina Newkirk, Katherine McKee, Colby Roberts, and Jeffrey Fields. Art Exhibits Berkeley City College presents the group art show, Variable Orientation, a collection of multi-media works. Pieces blend traditional media such as photography and painting with the technological edge that digital software brings to the artwork. The show will be on display in the Emeritus Center, Room 146, Student Services building during the month of April. An opening reception will be held Wednesday, April 16, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. College of Marin Fine Arts Instructor, Katrina Wagner, has two ongoing exhibits. “Portraits” is a one woman show being held at the Marin Theatre Company at 397 Miller Avenue in Mill Valley. It will be open through April 19 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Katrina will also be part of a group fiber art show taking place at the Olive Hyde Gallery at 123 Washington (at Mission Blvd.) in Fremont.
