Library Services for Distance Education (DE) Students

The College of Marin Library is committed to supporting the information needs of all students regardless of location. Students working on their assignments from off-campus are able to obtain a wealth of information to meet their research needs by using the resources listed on this page.

The Reference Librarian

Students are encouraged to consult with a reference librarian for advice in planning their research and to learn what library services might be useful to them. The reference librarian can answer short, factual questions and provide in-depth guidance on research strategies and library resources.

DE Librarian – The College of Marin Library is pleased to support our DE students by providing remote reference services via email.  John Erdmann is serving as the DE Librarian this semester.  You may contact John at askthelibrary@marin.edu. He will strive to reply to all email enquiries submitted between Sunday and Thursday within 24 hours.

Reference Desk – For telephone assistance, please call the on-duty reference librarian at (415) 485-9475.  The Reference Desk at the Kentfield Campus Library is staffed with an information professional from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm Mondays-Thursdays, and Fridays from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Online Writing Center

Free online writing tutoring is now available to all currently enrolled College of Marin students. The Online Writing Center (OWC) is staffed with experienced COM tutors—instructional specialists and English instructors—enabling students to address their writing questions online, 24/7.  There are helpful grammar and composition links, as well as instructional materials about all aspects of the writing process and essay mechanics. Students can use these resources, as well as get help from tutors. While tutors do not proofread or edit students' work, they do provide assistance to students who are working to correct their patterns of errors and who need help with essay mechanics.

The COM writing tutors can help you with:

  • Writing assignments for all college subjects
  • Grammar, idea development, organization, and research
  • College entrance essays, UC/CSU applications
  • Scholarship applications
  • Resumes and cover letters

All COM students and faculty can self-register to access the OWC by completing the following 5 steps:

1)      Login to your MyCOM account using your username and password.

2)      Click on the “Distance Education” tab.

3)      Click on “Log into Moodle directly,” (on the right side of your screen).

4)      Click on the “My home” link.  (If you don’t see the link, click on the + sign in the Navigation block on the top left of your screen.)

5)      Click on “XLOWC.201210” in the Self-Registration Block on the left side of your screen.

If you need help, please send an e-mail to moodlehelp@marin.edu or visit the Writing Center in LC 120.
