Applications for staff permits are made available in the mail rooms of both campuses during July, August and September. To obtain a staff permit at other times, contact your department head or department administrative assistant for an application, or contact the Police Department at Ext. 7455.

New options for students:

In addition to new and used copies of our textbooks that have always been available to students, the bookstore is now offering two new options:

  • Textbook Rentals
  • Downloadable Digital versions

Textbook Rental program:  In this case students pay upfront about half the price of a new textbook and must give the bookstore a credit card number that is valid at least a month past the end of the semester.  If they do NOT return the book, the bookstore will charge the difference plus a service fee.

How are textbooks selected for the rental program?

  • Book orders need to be in well in advance of the start of the semester.
  • The book must be eligible.  For example, workbooks would not be eligible as students write in them.  Old editions that are about to be updated, would not be eligible.

How will I know if my textbook is available with these options?

  • The most direct way is to visit the students' "buy textbooks online" webpage and enter the semester and your course.  You can also go to whywaitforbooks.com where you enter your state, select College of Marin. This gets you to the same place.  Information on your textbooks is frequently updated as more options become available.  Click here for an example of the option information that students would see.  Textbook Example

Putting Books on Reserve in the Library

Please consider putting copies of your textbooks on reserve in the library.  Perhaps you have an extra copy you could loan to the library, can get an extra exam copy.  Another option would be to ask your department to purchase a copy for this purpose.  Given California’s budget cuts, book grants are less available and perhaps nonexistent. Having textbooks available in the library will give students who are unable to purchase the textbook right away a chance to keep up.

To put a book on reserve:

  • Ask for a “Request to Place Materials on Reserve” Form from the Circulation Desk at the Kentfield Library.
  • One form for each book title
  • If more than one copy of a single book, be sure to mark if they have different loan periods.
  • Please specify the dates you want it to be on reserve.
  • At the end of the semester, please either extend for the next semester, or retrieve your books.

Reprographics

Duplicating service for class materials is available through the Reprographics Center on the Kentfield Campus (LC Room 70).

To assure that materials are available, materials to be duplicated should be submitted at least three working days in advance for any given class session. Attach a completed Printing Request Form to the material you wish duplicated and take it to the Reprographics Center (in the Learning Resources Center). IVC faculty may use Campus Courier for delivery of printing requests to the Kentfield Campus. Remember to mark IVC in the upper right hand corner of your printing request. Completed work will be returned to the IVC Mailroom Building AS 127).

The Reprographics Center is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. You can drop off requests in the Kentfield Mailroom after hours.  There is a "mailbox" on the center table.  Place your request in the mail box and raise the flag!  If you need to pick up your order after hours in the evening or on the weekend, please clearly indicate this on the request form.

Completed jobs will be available on the counter in reprographics or for after-hours pick-up, on the counter in the Mailroom or in your mailbox if requested.

Materials duplicated for College of Marin classes should not bear any business logos. If you wish to use the College logo on your cover page, the College will provide the stationery. The instructor's name and course name should be on the materials to be duplicated.

Also, we encourage all instructors to create a packet of existing course materials that number 25 pages or more. The packet can then be sold to your students at the campus bookstores, and the duplication costs to your department will be significantly lower.

Copyrights on Syllabi and Workbooks

Classroom Scheduling Conflicts

Every effort is made to avoid having two classes assigned to the same room at the same time. It can happen, though, usually during a last minute scheduling change that comes too late to notify everyone concerned. If your class conflicts with another, please call your Department Chair. We will make a temporary room change. A new room will be assigned before your next class meeting. Bear with us; we know how disruptive the situation is, and we will do everything we can to resolve the conflict as quickly and as smoothly as possible.

Please check the online schedule "revisions" section before your first class meeting to make sure there haven't been any last minute changes to your scheduled room.

Classroom Care

Please leave the classroom in the same condition in which you found it. At the end of each class, windows should be closed, blackboards erased, and desks returned to their original arrangement.

If there is a problem in your room, please discuss the needed remedy with your Department Chair so that a work order can be issued.

All classrooms have room capacities. If an unusually large number of students appear at the first class session, please do not add students beyond the seats available. Discuss the class size with your Department Chair and a room change will be made whenever possible.

If you find that your room is too hot or too cold, please contact the administrative assistant for your department so that Maintenance can be notified.

Classroom Keys

Instructors are authorized to have a key to their classrooms.  Please check with your discipline's administrative assistant to make sure you have keys to your classroom.  Key requests must be authorized by department chairs or deans. When you receive the key, please sign the white form and return it to her.  Your keys should be returned after the last class meeting.

Custodians will open – in an emergency. Occasionally, at the beginning of the semester, a Custodian might be asked by our office to open a classroom if the instructor has not yet received their key.  It is usually the department Admin. Assistant that calls ahead and asks that the room be opened. The general rule of thumb on both campuses is that Police open the buildings in the early morning unless the building has a morning Custodian.  Police do not open classrooms.  Custodians lock up the buildings at night.

In addition the back-up for evening classes held Monday through Thursday during the regular semester is to contact the evening Administrator to unlock a classroom door under special circumstances i.e. instructor left key at home; classroom change etc.  The evening administrator can be contaced until 8:00 pm at:

Kentfield:  415-747-0699

IVC:  415-747-0658

In addition the Police can open a classroom in emergency situations.  Keep in mind that if the officer is handling a situation he/she may not be able to respond right away and could delay the instructor’s classroom time.  Therefore, it is important to have your own classroom key and remember to bring it with you!

Also, be aware that the Media Services Department will lock any room after delivering equipment, so please be certain the room is locked again after class.

Emergency Procedures Evenings and Saturdays

There are three options, in case of an emergency on the Kentfield Campus at night or on Saturday:

  1. There is usually an evening staff person on duty until 7:30 pm in the Community Education Office in Student Services 148 inside the Emeritus Center on the Kentfield Campus.  You can call ext. 7318 on campus or 415-485-9318 from an outside line.
  2. At both IVC and Kentfield, there is a night administrator available from 4:30 pm to 8 pm Monday - Thursday on both the IVC and Kentfield campuses during the fall and spring semesters.  The night administrator can assist you with any problems such as locked classrooms, room conflicts or other problems. This is a rotating duty, so different administrators will be on duty.  You can reach this person at:
    1. Kentfield:  415-747-0699
    2. IVC:           415-747-0658
  3. If you have an emergency problem and the evening staff/night administrator are not immediately available, or if you teach on weekends when the College offices are closed or no staff is on duty, you can call the Police Dispatcher at 485-9696 (or ext. 7696 on campus) who will in turn call the Campus Police.

If you need to be reached by a family member for an emergency after 7 or 8 pm or on Saturdays, you can be contacted through the Campus Police by calling the Police Dispatcher at 415-485-9696.

For other procedures such as evacuation or when there is a power outage, refer to the yellow handbook posted inside most classrooms.  You can also refer to the following information in case of other disaster:

http://www.marin.edu/police/disasterprep.htm

As always, in an life-threatening emergency, please call 911!  If you are calling from a campus phone dail 9 first - so 9-911.
