English as a Second Language (ESL)

For over twenty years, College of Marin has been addressing the needs of English learners through its high quality English as a Second Language (ESL) Programs. Through free non-credit ESL classes, credit ESL classes and a fee-based Intensive English Program, the College of Marin has helped countless Marin residents and international students from over 50 countries fulfill their educational, career and personal goals.

To find the best class level, we assess your English skills before you enter any of these programs.

Open College

You can now take credit ESL classes through the Community Education program (Community Education courses are not given for credit and are not graded). Credit classes cover intermediate to advanced level English skills. However, all students will be expected to participate fully and do the class work. Progress to the next level of ESL classes will be based on achievement in the class you take.

New students will need to take the credit ESL placement test to determine their ESL level. Contact the ESL Office for information about the tests date or to determine your level from a previous credit ESL test.

The non-refundable fees are:
$124 for 1-unit classes
$137 for 1.5-unit classes
$156 for 2-unit classes
$195 for 3-unit classes
$208 for 4-unit classes
$228 for 5-unit classes

How to sign up:

Attend class the first day. The times and dates of classes are listed in the credit class schedule.
Bring to the class:

  • 1) Proof of your credit ESL level from the ESL test. If you have taken the credit ESL test already, ask the ESL office to give you proof of your ESL level.
  • 2) A community education registration form, with information about yourself (name, address, etc.) already filled in. The ESL Office has copies of these forms.
  • 3) Ask the instructor if there is room for you to sign up for the class. The instructor will sign the registration form.
  • 4) Bring the completed, signed registration form to the ESL Office RIGHT AWAY, along with a check or money order for the fee payable to College of Marin. You may also write in a valid credit card number and sign the registration form to charge your card. NO CASH PAYMENTS are accepted.
  • 5) The ESL office will make sure your form is complete and will turn it in to Admissions and Registration.

If you cannot attend the class the first day, attend as soon as you can.
New students will be added to credit classes only during the
first two weeks of the semester.
