MARIN CHAPTER
CALIFORNIA NATIVE PLANT SOCIETY

Dedicated To The Preservation Of California Native Flora

The flower part you selected is:

The sepal

The sepals are found below the petals and encase the rest of the flower when it is in bud and not yet opened. All of the sepals on one flower make up the calyx. Together, the sepals and the petals of a flower are called the perianth. In many plants, the sepals are green and differ in shape from the petals; however, in some plants the sepals and the petals appear identical. In these cases, the perianth segments are called tepals. Can you think of some members of the lily family that have tepals instead of petals and sepals?

The other things you can select in this picture are: a bud, petals, anthers, stigma, and ovary.
