Etiquette Questions and Answers

What general tips of etiquette can you give regarding such things as appropriate dress, arriving at the restaurant, conversation, body language, napkins, and being introduced to people?

Dress formally but appropriately.  It may be necessary to call the interviewer and ask what type of dress is appropriate.  Avoid showy jewelry or accessories.  Arrive on time.  If you are first, wait for the host.  Open doors if you are the first person going through.  As soon as you sit down, put your opened napkin in your lap.  When being introduced, focus on remembering names.  In conversation, stay away from religion, politics, sex, or any intimate topic. Pay attention to what others say; don’t monopolize the conversation.  Sit up straight. Don’t smoke. Laugh at other’s jokes. Look as if you are interested.

What specific tip can you give regarding the use of silverware, what to order, when to begin eating, and how to eat?

Start with the outside silverware (such as a fork on your left for a salad).  Your water glass it to the right; your butter plate is to the left.  Begin eating only after the host begins.  Try to pace your eating so that you are neither the first nor the last finished.  Don’t chew with your mouth open; don’t speak with your mouth full.  Don’t reach across the table.  Expect to be served from the left.  Pass things to the right.  You may ask the host’s recommendation from the menu.  Don’t order the most expensive item.  Don’t order an appetizer or dessert unless the host does.  It’s best to avoid all alcoholic beverages during business meals.  Avoid ordering an entrée that is difficult to eat gracefully.  Generally, you should wait until everyone has be served before beginning to eat.

How should the interviewee follow up a dinner?

The guest should always write a thank-you note to thank the host.
