Assignments for Chapter 9 This Assignment Due: Within one week
1.) After reading the chapter, complete the Writing Improvement Exercise, Evaluating Headings and Titles, page 244. Identify the following report headings and titles as “talking” or “functional/descriptive.” Do not turn in, but match your answers with these:
16. Overview Functional/descriptive; dull, vague 17. Suggestions for Energy Savings and Recycling Talking; precise, effective 18. Annual Budget Functional/descriptive; dull, could be improved 19. How Instant Messaging Can Improve Corporate Communication Talking; vigorous, positive, effective 20. Solution: Promoting an Employee Carpool Program Both functional and talking; effective 21. Solving Our Network Problems with an Extranet Talking; vigorous, positive, effective 22. Comparing Copier Volume, Ease of Use, and Speed Talking; clear, effective 23. Summary Functional/descriptive; vague
2.) Complete the Grammar Mechanics Checkup, page 249. To prepare, refresh your knowledge by reading the Semicolons and Colons section in the Grammar Mechanics Handbook on page GM-29-30, then answer the sentences on page GM-31. Do not send the exercise to me, but check your answers with the key on page K-1.
3.) Turn in Case 9.1— Information Report: Describing Your Job, page 245. Read the Information Reports section (Pages 233-234). Using a memo format (page 235 or 237), write a 1 1/2-2-page information report describing your job. Use these headings:
Background (Describe the company, its services and locations, its accomplishments, number of clients and employees, Web address, and any other profile information.) Discussion of Duties (Describe what you do in the company and the tasks and skills required to perform the tasks. You can work from a job description.) Summary (Summarize the experience you have gained in the job and your professional development plans.)
4.) Chapter 9—Interactive Chapter Quiz. After reading Chapter 9, do the following:
1. Go to the GUFFEY book companion website and log in. 2. At the bottom of the screen, click on View Chapter Quizzes now. Select Chapter 9. Accept the default and click Start Assignment now. 3. To the left of the screen, select Chapter Review Quiz. Accept the option to display all questions on one page, and click Start Assignment Now. 4. Try this before taking the quiz: Click on REVIEW. Click OK when the dialog box asks if you want to continue. (You will be able to go back and take the test later as many times as you like.) Scroll down and read through each question and notice the correct answer. Consider this a study exercise before taking the quiz. 5. Scroll to the top and click on Start Over and take the quiz for a grade. Click OK to the dialog box question asked. When finished answering all questions, press “Submit” at the bottom of the screen. Click “End quiz and view summary” Fill in the E-mail boxes, sending your test results to me at brian.wilson@marin.edu.
This activity provides an excellent chapter review, and you can explore these review quizzes for any of our chapters.
