HUMAN COMMUNITY AMMA'S KITCHEN About AMMA: http://amma.org/about/how-she-began Amma’s Kitchen is an entirely volunteer – run organization. Amma (meaning mother) is a spiritual leader from India who travels around the world serving those in need. Their organization hosts a large event in November at their headquarters in Castro Valley, and they need your help preparing for it (weed whacking, cleaning the property, basic landscaping etc.). More information can be found at their website: http://bayarea.amma.org/ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ BRIDGE THE GAP COLLEGE PREP Below is an email from Jennifer Nichols describing the programs at Bridge the Gap College Prep: “Our after school program meets at 105 Drake Ave in Marin City. We are open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30-5:30 . Four teachers in three classrooms provide academic and homework support to students grouped by grades: 1-3, 4-6 and 7-8. Each teacher uses small group instruction and project based learning to help our students catch up and ultimately excel, sending the students to school the next day prepared and eager to learn more. Volunteers support the teachers and work with the children in small groups, helping with homework and group activities. For the after school program, we request that volunteers commit to one afternoon a week. The evening program is a one-on-one tutoring program working with students in grades K-12, meeting on Monday and Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30 at the Marin City Church of God at 629 Drake Avenue (the corner of Drake Avenue and Buckelew Street) for our K-4th graders and at 105 Drake Ave from 630-745 for our 5th-12th graders. We ask for a weekly commitment of one evening for the school year. Our students and tutors are matched in pairs, based on skill level and desired grade group, and stay together for that year. The tutor commitment is twofold: being there for the student every week, nurturing trust and developing a relationship, as well as supporting them academically; helping them with their homework, strengthening their math, reading, and writing skills. Credentialed teachers circulate and support the tutor/student pairs. Let me know if either sounds like a good fit for you. Among other services, St. Vincent de Paul’s offers nutritious meals, affordable housing, and employment.
