Survival Tips.........

Allow two hours of homework time each week for each unit/credit you enroll (e.g. a three unit class requires a minimum of 6 hours of homework per week in order to pass the class) Therefore, a 3 unit lecture class will not only require you to attend three hours of class time on campus, but six hours of homework time outside of class time must be added per week. More homework time is required if you are having difficulty understanding the assignment.

Know your real priorities before enrolling in college. (in other words, be realistic about your life......if you have a child to care for and/or family to support, this is your number one priority before school.........after all, family is permanent and school is temporary; when school is completed and family is gone, what have you missed?)

Don't be afraid to ask your professor questions when the subject matter is unclear. (Professors have office hours specifically for students...use that time to clarify lectures and professor's goals in class)

Seek out tutoring at the first sign you need extra help... Do not wait! (chances are, you are not the only one confused by the material. If you wait too long to clarify a problem you don't understand, it may be too late. Usually, every lecture and homework assignment is used as a foundation for the next lecture and assignment).

If you are having problems concentrating, make an appointment with a counselor, immediately. The matter may be resolved by a simple solution. (Counselors at the College are skilled in listening and problem resolution. Having an objective person listen may be all that you need).
