Since its inception nearly 50 years ago, the highly acclaimed Drama Department at College of Marin has inspired thousands of students to dwell in the worlds of Shakespearean classics, celebrated musicals, improvisational comedy, historical monologues, and thought-provoking experimental productions.

Founded in 1964 by celebrated director James Dunn, a College of Marin graduate who received the 2011 Life Achievement Directing Award from the San Francisco Bay Area Critics Circle, the program has become a professional training ground for Hollywood movie stars, Broadway actors, and community theater headliners. Some of the best known graduates are Robin Williams, David Dukes, and Kathleen Quinlan; but hundreds of students have gone on to study in conservatories and work in academia, national repertories, television, and film.

With over 250 productions to date, the department has earned numerous honors and its instructors have received many prestigious awards. The program offers students a unique opportunity to learn about the industry from seasoned professionals. The college recently received the 2012 Bohemian Best of the North Bay, Best Performing Arts Center in Marin County.
