Universally acknowledged as one of the masterpieces of world theatre, The Cherry Orchard is a play of timeless and bittersweet beauty. Chekhov's final play gracefully explores the complex themes of class consciousness and human fragility in coping with a rapidly changing society. The once wealthy Madame Ranevskaya returns to her country estate after frittering away her fortune on a failed love affair. Taxes must be paid or she will lose everything, including her beloved cherry orchard. Friends and family seem unable to grasp the crushing reality of the situation. Only the nouveau riche merchant Lopakhin, the son of a peasant, has a solution. As the deadline approaches, the fate of the cherry orchard remains in limbo.
