College of Marin Welcomes New Superintendent/President

Board of Trustees Appoints David Wain Coon, Ed.D

Kentfield, CA–September 21, 2010–College of Marin Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that David Wain Coon, Ed.D. has been appointed to serve as the college’s new Superintendent/President, replacing former Superintendent/President Frances L. White, Ph.D., who recently retired.

Dr. Coon is a creative, innovative leader and brings a wealth of expertise, knowledge and experience which will greatly benefit the college community” said Dr. Eva Long, COM Board of Trustees President.

“We are thrilled and excited to have him take the helm in guiding the District to the next level of excellence with a proven track record of positive problem solving, community outreach, and  sensitivity on focusing on student learning needs, faculty teaching and learning, and administration/staff  supporting Students' First and learning as his priorities. Most of all, he is a superb communicator, sincere with the highest integrity, and patient listener with a keen sense of humor. We are so fortunate to have Dr. Coon lead the District during these challenging times  His record is exceptional and he shares the Board’s vision for the future of College of Marin and our Marin community.”

I look forward to working collaboratively with the Board of Trustees and the college community as we serve the dynamic educational needs of Marin County and beyond,” Coon stated.

Throughout his 20-year career in higher education, Dr. Coon has been recognized for his leadership locally, regionally and nationally.  Dr. Coon has been the President of Evergreen Valley College in San Jose, California since July 2005.  The college has thrived under his leadership and he has been a true champion of the richly diverse student body.

Prior to Evergreen Valley College, Dr. Coon held the positions of Vice President for Student Success at Cascadia Community College, Executive Dean of Student Services at Green River Community College, Vice President of Student Services at The Art Institute of Seattle, and Director of Student Development at Pierce College, all in Washington.  Dr. Coon has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications and Public Relations from Central Washington University, a Master of Education degree in Student Personnel Administration from Western Washington University and a Doctor of Education degree in Educational Leadership with emphasis in Organizational Development from Seattle University.

The search for a new Superintendent/President began in February 2010 with the Board of Trustees hiring Ralph Andersen and Associates, a firm highly regarded for their professional guidance to higher education institution. They assisted the Board in conducting a national search which drew 65 candidates from across the country. A search committee composed of college faculty, staff, students, community leaders, and administrative employees interviewed an outstanding group of 11 semi-finalist candidates and after thorough research and numerous interviews, the committee identified five exceptional finalists.

The Board of Trustees encourages all Marin County citizens, community leaders, COM  faculty/staff and students to join the College of Marin in welcoming Dr. David Wain Coon.
