Paul Smith/Ronald Cavaye FREE Piano-Duo Concert – February 14 and 15
Bay area pianist (and College of Marin faculty member) Paul Smith is joined by British pianist Ronald Cavaye in two FREE performances of three works for two pianos by American composers with interludes by soprano Eileen Morris singing love songs of Virgil Thomson and Erich Wolfgang Korngold.
The program opens with turn of the century African American composer Nathaniel Dett’s exuberant Juba Dance. Frederic Rzewski’s Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues is a virtuoso tour de force based on an early twentieth century union song. The evening concludes with the lavish Fantasy on Themes from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess by Percy Grainger.
In between the piano duo works, soprano Eileen Morris celebrates the Valentine’s Day weekend by performing Virgil Thomson’s song cycle Mostly About Love and Erich Korngold’s settings of four Shakespeare texts.
The program lasts approximately 70 minutes and is performed without intermission.
