News Release COM Second Annual International Film Festival
The films will be shown on Fridays at 7 p.m. in Olney Hall 96 at College of Marin, 835 College Avenue, Kentfield, CA. Seats are on a first-come, first-seated basis. Plan to arrive around 6:30 p.m. for a good seat. Italian film night A cult favorite among Italian youth, Tre metri sopra il cielo (2004) is a tale about a volatile romance that takes a tragic turn. Directed by Luca Lucini. College of Marin Italian Instructor Caterina Labriola will present the film. French film night Marius et Jeannette is a 1997 French romantic comedy directed by Robert Guédiguian. It won the Louis Delluc Prize and the César Award for Best Actress, and received César nominations for Best Film, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Most Promising Actress, and Best Writing. The film will be presented by College of Marin French Instructors Deborah Levin / Marie Goff-Tuttle. Chinese film night Happy Times is a film about ordinary people taking extraordinary measures to find happiness in a cruel (and capitalist) world. Zhang Yimou (Raise the Red Lantern, Not One Less) directs this light comedy with a fairytale feel. Japanese movie night Japanese director Hirokazu Koreeda (Nobody Knows, After Life) warps popularly held conventions of the typical samurai revenge tale with this tale of a man whose quest to avenge the death of his father gradually takes a back seat to his emerging role as a key figure in the community. College of Marin Japanese Instructor Kazuko Shiota will introduce this film. American Sign Language movie night Directed by Joseph Sargent, Sweet Nothing in My Ear (2008) is a family drama about a deaf and hearing couple who struggle to decide whether or not to give their deaf son a cochlear implant. College of Marin Sign Language Instructor Jeannie Leighton will introduce the film. Spanish language film night Machuca (2004) is a Chilean film written and directed by Andrés Wood. Set in 1973 Santiago during Salvador Allende's socialist government and shortly before General Augusto Pinochet's military coup, the film tells the story of two friends, one of them the very poor Pedro Machuca who is integrated into the elite school of his friend Gonzalo Infante. This film will be introduced by College of Marin Spanish Instructor and Department Chair Radica Portello.
