ENGG 235  Engineering Mechanics: Statics

General Description

ENGG 235 Engineering Mechanics: Statics is the foundation course in vector mechanics of rigid bodies for engineering students. In addition to a generalized description of the mechanics of rigid bodies at rest, the course addresses specific topics, including analysis of forces and moments acting on particles, rigid bodies, and structures; shear and bending moments in beams; distributed forces; static friction; and moments of inertia.

Pre-requisites

for the course include one semester of calculus-based physics (PHYS 207A at COM) and second-semester Calculus (MATH 124 at COM).  MATH 124 may be taken concurrently.  Students must submit proof of pre-requisites in order to enroll in the course.

Access Requirements

Students enrolled in the online section of ENGG 235 may participate in the same lectures as students in the traditional 'face-to-face' section of the course (meets Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:40 – 11am).  The lectures will be presented simultaneously to students in the classroom and via the internet using freely available web-conferencing software (CCC Confer), which allows real-time interaction between students and instructor.  All lectures will be archived for later viewing (or re-viewing).

All handouts and assignments will be posted on the course website, and online students must submit homework electronically.

Examinations

3 'Midterm' Exams and a Final Exam must be taken in person at designated dates and times on the College of Marin Kentfield Campus. Students may also arrange to take the exams at certain partner community colleges (contact instructor to inquire about a particular college in your area).
