New HOOKED on MARIN Speaker Series

Hooked on Marin Logo

Hooked on Marin is a community based partnership comprised of Marin county public service agencies and educational districts collaborating to foster social, educational, and cultural enrichment opportunities in Marin.

We have combined forces to provide a series of three moderator-led events featuring a panel of people who have been or are involved in local, Marin-based topics. The discussions for 2012 are based on the Organic Movement, the Mountain Bike Revolution, and Marin County Rock and Roll.

These events will take place in September, October, and November of this year. A limited number of seats are available for each event and registrations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. The gatherings will be limited to a certain number of registrants, so please sign-up early.

New 2012 Speaker Series

Marin County Rock ‘n’ Roll Music History
with Richie Unterberger and Dan Hicks

7pm, Wednesday, Nov. 28
Corte Madera Community Center Hall
498 Tamalpais Drive, Corte Madera

In the 1960s and 1970s, the Bay Area's rock scene exploded, capturing the imagination of the world with music that endures and influences popular culture to this day. From the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin to Dan Hicks and transplants like Van Morrison, many of the era's leading musicians lived and played in Marin County during this time, giving the region a lasting role in the sounds that revolutionized rock.

Speaker:
Richie Unterberger is a rock historian, instructor, and award-winning author of nearly a dozen books about rock history, including a two-part history of 1960s folk-rock and volumes on the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and the Who. (www.richieunterberger.com)

Richie teaches community education courses at the College of Marin on the Beatles, the Summer of Love, the British Invasion, and the history of rock from 1955 to 1980. He often presents events based around rare rock film clips at Bay Area libraries, including the Larkspur Public Library.

Special Guest:
Dan Hicks is a longtime Marin County music legend and an American singer-songwriter who's been vital to the evolution of Bay Area sounds ranging from psychedelia to western swing.

Moderator:

Terry McGovern is one of the San Francisco Bay Area’s most versatile performers. He started his movie career working with George Lucas, including Star Wars. He also appeared in American Graffiti, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Nine Months. Terry teaches commercial and character voice, as well as scene and monologue acting, at his own Marin Actors’ Workshop and at College of Marin.

Rock historian Richie Unterberger will present rare film clips and audiovisual material telling the story of the golden age of Marin County rock. Ranging from obscure teenage combos to psychedelic sounds and country rock, the sounds and sights of the era will be brought to life at the Corte Madera Community at 498 Tamalpais Drive in Corte Madera, California, not far from where some of the Bay Area's leading rockers worked and played!
